Army Chief Pays Tribute to Kargil Heroes, Says Their Sacrifice Continues to Inspire the Nation

New Delhi, July 2026: On the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth paid heartfelt tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, describing their courage, dedication and supreme sacrifice as a timeless source of inspiration for the nation’s armed forces.

In his message commemorating the occasion, General Seth said Kargil Vijay Diwas stands as an enduring symbol of the Indian Army’s indomitable spirit, unwavering commitment to duty and unmatched bravery in the face of adversity. He said the heroic actions of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil conflict not only protected India’s sovereignty but also wrote a glorious chapter in the country’s military history.

“Their valour and unwavering resolve scripted a golden history of victory while safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. Their supreme sacrifice continues to inspire every soldier of the Indian Army,” General Seth said, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to defending the nation’s borders and contributing to nation-building.

India is observing the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas with patriotic fervour and deep gratitude, honouring the brave soldiers who reclaimed strategic mountain peaks from Pakistani intruders during the Kargil conflict in 1999. Ceremonies, tributes and remembrance events are being held across the country to pay homage to the fallen heroes whose courage ensured India’s victory in one of its most challenging military campaigns.

The Kargil War began in May 1999 after Pakistani troops and infiltrators occupied strategic positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Their objective was to disrupt the vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh and threaten India’s military presence in the Siachen Glacier region.

In response, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Vijay, a determined military campaign to evict the intruders from the occupied heights. The operation received crucial support from the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar, while the Indian Navy maintained strategic deployment to strengthen India’s military posture. Throughout the conflict, India adhered to its policy of not crossing the Line of Control while successfully implementing its strategy of containing, evicting and defeating the infiltrators.
