Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro’s Son To Contest Presidential Elections In October This Year.

Rio De Janeiro; July 2026: Former President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro’s eldest son Flavio Bolsonaro, a right wing senator is all set to seek mandate for the forthcoming Presidential elections in October this year (2026). Flavio Bolsonaro – the 45 years old senator is a member of the Liberal Party, which at a party convention on today (Sunday – 26th July 2026; IST) has nominated him as the party’s presidential candidate in the October elections.

“I may be calmer, more cheerful, more composed and more moderate, but Bolsonaro’s blood flows here”, said Flávio Bolsonaro, touching his arm in front of a cheering crowd in the city of São Paulo. Flávio Bolsonaro is expected to become Brazil’s current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s main rival in the election. Jair Bolsonaro was president from 2019 to 2022 and was sentenced to 27 years imprisonment last year (12th September 2025) for planning a coup against President Lula.

It is mention worthy that today, Flávio Bolsonaro has warned that Brazil could “take enormous steps towards a dictatorship” if 80-year-old Lula is re-elected. That rhetoric was echoed by Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, who attended the party convention to show his support for the Brazilian presidential candidate. “I am convinced that there is no one else capable of putting an end to the Lula risk that hangs over Brazil”, said the Argentinian President.

The first round of the presidential election in Brazil will be held on October 04th. If none of the candidates manages to secure more than 50% of the vote, another round of voting will be held on October 25th.

According to the prosecution, part of the plan for the attempted coup was to eliminate Lula before he officially took power. According to official release, Bolsonaro has been convicted of a total of 05 counts. In addition to attempted coup, the charges include participating in an armed criminal organisation and attempting to violently abolish democracy. Bolsonaro’s seven co-defendants, including former ministers and military commanders, were also convicted in the case.

They have all, like the former president, have declared themselves innocent throughout the process. Bolsonaro has also called the case against him politically motivated and a witch hunt. After the decision, which implies a guilty verdict and a long prison sentence, the former president’s lawyers say that he respects the Supreme Court’s decision, but that he deeply disagrees with it. It also states that the verdict is ‘excessive and out of proportion’ and that Bolsonaro will probably appeal.

The trial has already created internal divisions in the country long before its decision, with mass scale demonstrations both in favour of and in opposition to the former president, extending beyond Brazil’s borders, as the United States President Donald Trump have interfered. In July 2025, President Trump had announced in a letter to the Brazilian government that the country would henceforth be hit with a 50% tariff on exports to the United States. The letter also stated that the case against Bolsonaro should be dropped, a view that Trump has also expressed several times both before and after.
