PM Modi Extends Best Wishes to Indian Athletes as Commonwealth Games 2026 Begin in Glasgow

New Delhi, July 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed his best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the Commonwealth Games 2026, expressing confidence that the country’s athletes would uphold India’s sporting tradition with determination, dedication and excellence as the prestigious multi-sport event commenced in Glasgow, Scotland.

In a message posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister praised the commitment and hard work of Indian sportspersons, saying their achievements continue to inspire millions across the country.

“As the Commonwealth #Glasgow2026 Games begin, my best wishes to the Indian contingent. I am confident that our athletes will participate in the Games with passion, determination and a spirit of excellence. The skills and dedication of our athletes always inspire countless Indians,” PM Modi wrote.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games were formally declared open by King Charles III during a vibrant opening ceremony held at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena on Thursday. The spectacular event marked the return of the Games to the Scottish city for the first time since it successfully hosted the competition in 2014. The ceremony showcased Scotland’s rich cultural heritage through music, dance and artistic performances while welcoming athletes from across the Commonwealth.

India made a colourful appearance during the traditional Parade of Nations, with Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain leading the 126-member Indian contingent.

Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu proudly carried the Indian Tricolour as the country’s flag-bearer, while Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain carried the ceremonial Commonwealth baton, symbolising India’s hopes for another successful campaign at the Games.

India has sent athletes to compete in 13 disciplines, including para sports, and is aiming to build on its impressive performances in previous editions of the Commonwealth Games. The contingent includes several Olympic medallists, world champions and emerging talents expected to challenge for podium finishes across multiple events.

The Indian campaign had already begun even before the official opening ceremony, with the lawn bowls team becoming the first group of Indian athletes to compete. The team will be hoping to replicate the success achieved at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where India produced one of its most memorable performances in the sport.

Among India’s biggest medal contenders are Olympic and world champions across various disciplines. Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra will spearhead the athletics challenge, while Mirabai Chanu is expected to be one of the favourites in weightlifting. Lovlina Borgohain will lead India’s boxing campaign alongside a strong squad that is expected to compete for multiple medals.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games bring together athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, competing across 10 sports over an 11-day schedule. Although this edition features fewer events than previous Games, organisers have promised world-class competition and a memorable sporting spectacle.

With the opening ceremony concluded and competition underway, India now begins its quest to add another successful chapter to its rich Commonwealth Games legacy, buoyed by the support and best wishes of millions of fans back home.
