Telangana CM Directs Use of Idle Government Land for Indiramma Housing in Hyderabad’s Urban Region

Hyderabad, July 2026 : Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to identify and utilise vacant government land within Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) zone for the construction of Indiramma houses, aiming to provide affordable housing closer to employment hubs and essential urban infrastructure.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on the implementation of the Indiramma Urban Housing Scheme, the Chief Minister asked officials to prepare a comprehensive inventory of unused land owned by various government departments, particularly within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits. The initiative is intended to accelerate housing construction while ensuring beneficiaries have better access to workplaces, transport, education and healthcare facilities.

During the meeting, officials presented details of government land already identified across several Assembly constituencies. After reviewing the proposals, the Chief Minister instructed authorities to utilise vacant land belonging to departments such as the Police, Revenue and Transport for the housing programme. These departments, he said, could be allotted alternative land elsewhere to facilitate the development of residential projects without affecting their operational requirements.

Revanth Reddy stressed that housing projects built far away from urban centres often fail to achieve their intended purpose, as residents struggle with limited employment opportunities and inadequate connectivity. He observed that several housing colonies constructed on the outskirts in the past have remained underutilised because beneficiaries found it difficult to sustain their livelihoods after relocating.

The Chief Minister emphasised that future housing projects should be developed within or near existing residential areas so that families can continue to access jobs, schools, hospitals and other civic amenities. He said the government’s objective is not merely to provide homes but to ensure that beneficiaries enjoy a better quality of life without compromising their economic opportunities.

The Telangana government has already announced plans to build Indiramma houses for economically weaker sections across multiple constituencies within the CURE region. Each housing unit will have a built-up area of around 528 square feet, including a 400-square-foot carpet area.

The estimated construction cost of each flat is around Rs 11 lakh. Under the scheme, the state government will provide a subsidy of Rs 5 lakh, while beneficiaries will contribute the remaining Rs 6 lakh. The government will bear the full cost of land, significantly reducing the financial burden on eligible families.

In the first phase of the programme, the government plans to construct 7,680 flats across 17 Assembly constituencies in and around Hyderabad.

The selected constituencies include Rajendranagar, Maheshwaram, Serilingampally, Ibrahimpatnam, Malkajgiri, Nampally, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, Karwan, Bahadurpura, Amberpet, Kukatpally, Medchal, Quthbullapur, Sanathnagar, Secunderabad Cantonment and Malakpet.

The Chief Minister directed officials to fast-track the identification of suitable government land in these constituencies so that construction can begin without delay. He also called for close coordination among departments to ensure timely implementation of the ambitious urban housing initiative.

The review meeting was attended by Ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar, Roads and Buildings Department Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj, Director General of Police C.V. Anand, the Chief Minister’s Principal Secretaries N. Sridhar and V. Seshadri, along with other senior officials involved in the execution of the housing scheme.
