PM Modi Wishes Sonam Wangchuk Good Health After 26-Day Hunger Strike Ends
New Delhi, July 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his best wishes to activist Sonam Wangchuk after he ended his 26-day hunger strike, urging him to prioritise his health and follow medical advice during his recovery.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said, “I urge Sonam ji to follow the doctors’ advice in his daily routine and regain his old weight as soon as possible. I pray to the Almighty for his good health.”
Wangchuk concluded his fast earlier in the day at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. The fast was ended in the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, senior representatives of the Apex Body of Leh-Ladakh, doctors and members of his family.
The hunger strike had attracted nationwide attention, with leaders from across the political spectrum and several civil society organisations appealing to Wangchuk to end his fast due to concerns over his deteriorating health. Wangchuk had earlier revealed that around 65 Members of Parliament had either met him personally or signed letters requesting him to call off the protest.
He said his decision to end the fast came after extensive discussions and assurances received during negotiations. Wangchuk stressed that maintaining peace and preventing any form of violence remained a priority while continuing to pursue democratic dialogue.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi announced that the Centre has prepared a comprehensive draft legislation to strengthen the legal framework against examination paper leaks. The proposed Bill seeks to introduce stricter provisions and tougher punishments for those involved in paper leak cases.
According to the Prime Minister, the proposal will be considered by the Union Cabinet and is expected to be introduced during the ongoing session of Parliament next week.
Wangchuk’s 26-day fast ranks among the longest hunger strikes by a prominent public activist in recent years. While the protest has concluded, it has brought renewed national attention to issues concerning Ladakh as well as broader debates on governance, accountability and public policy, highlighting the continuing importance of dialogue in addressing public concerns.
