Houthis Claim Drone Shootdown as Red Sea Tensions Continue to Escalate

Sanaa, July 2026 : Yemen’s Houthi movement on Sunday claimed it had shot down a Saudi-operated reconnaissance drone over the northern province of Al-Jawf, as fresh security concerns emerged in the Red Sea following a reported incident involving a commercial tanker near the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said the group’s air defence units intercepted and destroyed the drone while it was allegedly conducting what he described as “hostile operations” over Al-Jawf province. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Sarea said the drone was brought down using “appropriate weaponry” but did not provide further operational details or evidence to support the claim.

The development came as the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a separate maritime security incident in the southern Red Sea. According to the advisory, a commercial tanker observed a splash from an unidentified projectile that landed close to the vessel while it was sailing near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. The UKMTO confirmed that the ship and its crew were safe and that the vessel continued its voyage without sustaining damage.

The latest incidents underscore growing tensions in the region following the Houthis’ announcement last week of a maritime blockade targeting Saudi-linked shipping. The group has also claimed responsibility for attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea, raising concerns about the safety of one of the world’s most critical maritime trade corridors.

In response to the escalating situation, the Saudi-led coalition has intensified military operations against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. On Saturday, Yemen’s state-run television reported that coalition airstrikes targeted Houthi military positions, including missile launch sites and weapons depots in northern Yemen.

The Houthis, meanwhile, claimed they retaliated by launching coordinated missile and drone attacks on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan and Yanbu regions, describing the strikes as a response to overnight coalition air raids on Houthi-held areas in western Yemen.

Yemen has remained embroiled in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthi movement seized large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa. The takeover prompted a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.

Although a United Nations-mediated truce expired in 2022, a fragile de facto ceasefire has largely prevented a return to full-scale fighting. However, the latest exchange of military actions has reignited fears of a broader regional escalation, with analysts warning that continued hostilities could further threaten maritime security and disrupt global shipping through the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
