Nation Pays Tribute to Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Celebrates Legacy of the ‘People’s President’

New Delhi, July 2026 : The nation on Monday remembered former President and eminent scientist Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his death anniversary, paying heartfelt tributes to the visionary whose contributions to India’s missile, space and defence programmes transformed the country into a formidable strategic power. Political leaders, scientists and citizens across the country honoured the Bharat Ratna awardee, recalling his unwavering commitment to national development, scientific innovation and youth empowerment.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to Dr Kalam through a message on social media, describing him as a visionary leader and the architect of India’s missile and space programmes. Shah said Dr Kalam’s scientific excellence laid the foundation for India’s emergence as a strong strategic power while his wisdom and humility inspired millions of Indians to dream big and strive for excellence. He added that the “People’s President” would always remain a role model for patriots and future generations.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also remembered Dr Kalam’s immense contribution to the nation, calling him a visionary who dreamt of a developed, self-reliant and powerful India. Birla said the former President’s leadership elevated India’s indigenous missile and space programmes to new heights, leaving an enduring legacy in the country’s scientific history. He noted that Dr Kalam built his life on the principles of knowledge, discipline, simplicity and national service, inspiring confidence, innovation and a spirit of nation-building among millions of young Indians.

Quoting one of Dr Kalam’s most celebrated thoughts—“Dreams are not those that come while sleeping; dreams are those that do not let you sleep”—Birla said the inspirational message continues to motivate the country’s youth to pursue their goals with dedication and perseverance.

Fondly known as the “Missile Man of India,” Dr Kalam played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s strategic defence capabilities through his leadership in the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. His work significantly advanced the country’s missile technology and contributed to India’s rise as a major scientific and strategic power. Beyond his achievements in defence and aerospace, he was admired for his humility, accessibility and deep connection with students, encouraging them to embrace science, innovation and national service.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid homage to the former President, describing his contribution to India’s defence and space sectors as unparalleled. He said Dr Kalam’s role in strengthening India’s nuclear capabilities and enhancing its global standing remains a source of pride for the nation. The Chief Minister added that his vision, simplicity and unwavering dedication to public service continue to inspire young Indians.

Dr Kalam served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 and earned widespread respect across political and social spheres for his integrity, humility and unwavering faith in the nation’s youth. Awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, he devoted his life to advancing science while championing education and innovation as the pillars of national progress.

On July 27, 2015, Dr Kalam passed away while delivering a lecture to students at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, symbolising his lifelong commitment to education until his final moments.

More than a decade after his passing, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s vision of a developed, self-reliant and technologically advanced India continues to inspire millions. His legacy remains deeply embedded in the nation’s scientific achievements, defence capabilities and the aspirations of countless young Indians who continue to regard him as one of the country’s greatest statesmen and scientists.
