The Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin, addressed a government function on December 30, 2024, at Kamaraj College, Thoothukudi. The event marked the launch of a new initiative, the extension of the “Budhuramab Sen Scheme,” which will now provide a monthly financial aid of Rs. 1000 to female students pursuing higher education in Tamil language at ICE-aided colleges. The ceremony also saw the performance of Umrah, symbolizing goodwill and blessings for the attendees.
Thoothukudi, renowned not just for its pearl jewelry but also for its significant cultural and historical heritage, was highlighted as a town that cherishes both its literary and revolutionary legacies. The speech acknowledged the martyrs and the rich traditions of Tamil poets and activists, reinforcing the town’s deep-rooted connection to Tamil identity and heritage. The Chief Minister addressed several dignitaries, including members of Parliament, local officials, and the public, emphasizing the importance of education and the Tamil Nadu government’s continuous efforts to promote women’s rights and education.
In his speech, Mr. Stalin reflected on the transformative journey of Tamil Nadu’s education system, noting the progressive policies introduced by the Justice Party and subsequent Tamil Nadu governments. He praised the contributions of leaders such as Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and Anna, who laid the groundwork for compulsory education and opened the doors of academic success for future generations. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of empowering women through education, citing the Pudhumai Penn (New Women) project, which provides monthly financial support to female students in Tamil Nadu.
Under this scheme, the government aims to increase the number of women completing higher education. Since its launch, over 527 weekly trips have been made to support students, and approximately 75,000 female students have benefited. The project, which has seen overwhelming success, is part of the larger vision to elevate Tamil Nadu as a global leader in women’s education. The Chief Minister emphasized that education is not just about personal success but about transforming society and contributing to the broader development of the community. He concluded with a call for continued commitment to women’s education, recognizing its role in shaping a more equitable society and ensuring long-term social change.
Through this initiative, Tamil Nadu’s government aims to create a lasting impact on the future of its youth, particularly women, by providing them with the financial and academic support they need to succeed and thrive. The Chief Minister’s message was one of hope, empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of equality and educational excellence.
