Australian Woman Convicted of Mushroom Poisoning Murders

Erin Patterson found guilty of killing three relatives and attempting to murder a fourth with poisoned beef wellington

Sydney : A 50-year-old Australian woman, Erin Patterson, has been found guilty of murdering three of her family members and attempting to kill a fourth by serving them poisonous mushrooms in a home-cooked meal.

A Supreme Court jury in Victoria unanimously convicted Patterson on Monday for the July 2023 deaths of Don and Gail Patterson—her in-laws—and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson. The victims died days after eating a beef wellington lunch prepared by Erin at her residence in Leongatha, about 110 kilometers from Melbourne.

Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived the poisoning after spending several weeks hospitalized. The court heard that all four guests suffered from amanita poisoning, caused by consuming deadly death cap mushrooms.

Patterson, who was arrested in November 2023, had pleaded not guilty. She claimed the toxic mushrooms were included in the dish by accident. However, prosecutors alleged that she intentionally picked the mushrooms, dehydrated and ground them into a powder, then secretly added them to the meal.

Though the prosecution did not suggest a clear motive, the court was told Patterson had faked a cancer diagnosis to persuade the guests to attend the lunch. She also allegedly claimed to have fallen ill to deflect suspicion and was accused of destroying evidence and misleading investigators.

Her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, had been invited to the lunch but canceled at the last minute. The jury began deliberations on June 30, and Erin Patterson will be sentenced at a future date.
