Horticulture Transforms Santer Potai’s Life, Brings Financial Empowerment
Raipur : Thanks to the initiatives under the National Agriculture Development Scheme and the Department of Horticulture, Santer Potai, a resident of Bhatpal village in the district, has seen a remarkable transformation in his life. Once solely dependent on paddy farming, Santer has now diversified into vegetable cultivation using modern horticultural techniques, significantly increasing his income and becoming a source of inspiration for fellow farmers.
Santer Potai, son of Rejuram, was earlier engaged in traditional farming to support his family. However, with declining yields and rising costs, his income had steadily decreased. At this critical juncture, he learned about the schemes of the horticulture department. After receiving detailed guidance from the officials, he began cultivating brinjal, tomato, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, and okra on one hectare of land.
By adopting advanced techniques and mulching methods, Santer successfully cultivated bottle gourd, tomato, bitter gourd, and chili. His total investment was around ₹80,000, while his produce fetched him earnings of ₹4 lakh, resulting in a net profit of ₹3.2 lakh. This led to a significant improvement in his financial situation.
Santer’s success has encouraged many farmers in the vicinity to turn towards horticulture. He sells his produce in local markets and residential school hostels. His journey not only showcases the effectiveness of government schemes but also proves that with proper guidance and hard work, farmers can achieve self-reliance.
