PM Modi to Visit Sweden on May 17–18 to Strengthen Innovation and Green Partnership Ties

New Delhi, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to begin the third leg of his ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour with a visit to Gothenburg, Sweden, following an invitation from Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The two-day visit, scheduled for May 17–18, is expected to significantly expand bilateral cooperation between India and Sweden across key sectors such as trade, innovation, green technology, and emerging industries.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi had earlier visited Sweden in 2018 to participate in the inaugural India-Nordic Summit, which laid the foundation for enhanced engagement between India and the Nordic countries.

During the upcoming visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold high-level bilateral talks with Prime Minister Kristersson. The discussions will focus on reviewing the entire spectrum of India-Sweden relations and identifying new opportunities for strategic collaboration. The MEA has noted that both sides are expected to explore avenues to further boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately USD 7.75 billion as of 2025, while Swedish foreign direct investment in India has reached USD 2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025.

The agenda for the talks is expected to include cooperation in areas such as clean energy transition, artificial intelligence, advanced and emerging technologies, startup ecosystems, resilient and diversified supply chains, defence manufacturing, space exploration, climate action, and strengthening people-to-people exchanges. Sweden, known for its strong innovation-driven economy and leadership in sustainable technologies, is viewed as a key European partner for India’s development priorities.

A key highlight of the visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s participation alongside Prime Minister Kristersson at the European Round Table for Industry, a leading platform that brings together top business leaders from across Europe. The session will also be addressed by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, underscoring the broader importance of India-EU economic and strategic engagement.

The Sweden visit follows closely after Prime Minister Modi concluded his official two-day trip to the Netherlands on Saturday, undertaken at the invitation of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. This marked his second visit to the country, reflecting the continued momentum in India-Netherlands relations.

During his stay in The Hague on May 16, Prime Minister Modi was received by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at the Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch, where bilateral discussions were held followed by a luncheon hosted in his honour. Subsequently, he held both restricted and delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Jetten, along with a dinner meeting in the evening.

Both leaders reviewed the longstanding historical trade links, strong people-to-people connections, and growing strategic cooperation between India and the Netherlands. They also acknowledged the positive outcomes of collaboration during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 and the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi in February 2026.

In a significant development, India and the Netherlands agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a “Strategic Partnership,” marking a new phase of deeper engagement across economic, technological, and geopolitical domains as India continues to expand its global diplomatic outreach.
