Rajnath Singh Pays Tribute to Fallen Heroes on Police Commemoration Day
New Delhi, Oct 2025 : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid homage to police martyrs at the National Police Memorial on Tuesday, highlighting their invaluable role in maintaining internal security and safeguarding society’s integrity. The occasion marks Police Commemoration Day, observed annually to honor the sacrifices of personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The day commemorates the events of 1959, when ten valiant policemen were killed in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh. Since then, the nation has paid tribute to police personnel who have given their lives to protect citizens.
Addressing officers and personnel gathered at the memorial, Singh said, “This is the day to remember the supreme sacrifices made by our police and paramilitary forces. I pay my tributes to those who have fallen on the line of duty to protect the citizens of this nation.”
Emphasizing the mutual dependence between society and the police, Singh stated, “Any society can only move towards peace and progress when it has a strong sense of security, justice, and trust. All our police personnel are responsible for ensuring these three pillars.”
He further added, “Conversely, the police can function effectively only when society cooperates with them and respects the law. When this relationship is based on mutual understanding, both society and the police prosper. Balanced collaboration between the two is essential.”
Highlighting the dual components of national security, Singh explained, “Every country’s security has two aspects: external and internal. While the Armed Forces and Coast Guards protect our borders, the police maintain internal security through coordination with intelligence agencies. If the Armed Forces protect the country, the police protect society. The Armed Forces safeguard the geographical integrity, while the police safeguard societal integrity.”
Singh underscored the unity of purpose between the police and the military, saying, “Both are pillars of national security. Whether the threat comes from across the borders or from within the country, those protecting India represent one shared mission: protecting the nation. Their platforms may differ, but the objective is the same.”
The Defence Minister also spoke on the evolving nature of crime, noting, “Today, crime has become multi-dimensional. It threatens not only life and property but also privacy, identity, and trust. The police must fight both crime and perception. Beyond legal duties, maintaining public trust is a moral responsibility, and our police have performed this exceptionally well.”
He concluded by appreciating the confidence citizens place in the security forces: “People sleep peacefully knowing that the Armed Forces protect our borders and the police patrol our streets and colonies. Citizens are assured that the police will stand with them whenever wrongdoing occurs.”
Singh’s remarks reinforced the vital role of police in internal security, their coordination with intelligence agencies, and the enduring bond between society and law enforcement—an essential pillar as India moves toward its vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and the Amritkaal era.
The Police Commemoration Day ceremony served as both a tribute to the martyrs and a reminder of the police’s unwavering dedication to the nation’s peace, stability, and integrity.
