Uttar Pradesh lays a strong foundation for AI in the medical sector, to emerge as a model state

The CM Yogi govt is working towards developing the state as a model state in the field of AI

CM Yogi’s vision is to maximize the use of AI in the health sector

With the use of AI in the state, innovation is gaining momentum through collaboration among research institutions, technology companies, and donor agencies

The objective is to use technology to deliver better, accessible, and timely healthcare services to the common people

Lucknow, January 2026 : With the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the nature of healthcare services in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, is changing rapidly.

Amid a population of nearly 24 crore, vast rural areas, and challenges ranging from maternal and child health to non-communicable diseases, the state’s healthcare system is being made technology-enabled and future-ready.

This is why Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful support tool in the health sector, taking decision-making, disease identification, and quality of treatment to new heights.

Through efforts, the Yogi Government has demonstrated to the country and the world that with strong political will, digital infrastructure, and the dedication of frontline workers, AI can significantly strengthen healthcare services.

In the near future, with equitable access and coordination among states, Uttar Pradesh will not only set an example at the national level but also globally in AI-based public health innovation.

The Additional Chief Secretary for Medical Health & Family Welfare Amit Kumar Gosh said, CM Yogi’s vision to use technology to provide better, accessible, and timely healthcare services to the common people. Over the past 8.5 years, along with strengthening the health infrastructure, priority has also been given to digital platforms.
As a result, Uttar Pradesh today is among the leading states in the country with the highest potential to implement AI-based healthcare solutions on the ground.

The state has around 10 lakh frontline health workers including ASHA workers, ANMs, nurses, and doctors, who form the backbone of healthcare services from rural to urban areas. To make their work easier and more effective, several major digital platforms are active in the state. These include the Health Management Information System (HMIS), Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Portal, Nikshay Portal for TB control, and e-Sanjeevani.

Today, these platforms are not limited to data collection alone but are playing a crucial role in policy formulation, monitoring, and quick decision-making. This data creates a strong foundation for AI-based solutions.

The Additional Chief Secretary also added, the state has made digital public infrastructure the central pillar of health reforms. Through e-Sanjeevani, the telemedicine network has expanded extensively. Today, Uttar Pradesh has become the state providing the highest number of teleconsultations in the entire country. This very network is now moving towards adopting AI-based clinical decision-making.

Currently, AI-based Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) are helping doctors at Primary Health Centres and through telemedicine services in making treatment decisions.

This system suggests various treatment options based on the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and available data. This not only improves the quality of treatment but also reduces the workload on doctors in hospitals with high patient volumes.

CM Yogi believes that AI cannot replace a doctor; rather, it empowers them further. With this philosophy, AI is being adopted in the state as a supportive tool.

National Health Mission Director General Dr Pinky Joval said, the number of TB patients in the state is significant. Keeping this in view, the Yogi government has given top priority to TB eradication.

She also added, by integrating AI-based analytical tools with the Nikshay Portal, areas and patient groups with higher risk are being identified. Mapping and early warning systems are helping doctors assess where additional resources and intensive monitoring are required. This enables identification even before cases emerge, strengthening CM Yogi’s vision that prevention is the best treatment.

At the same time, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates is among the major priorities of the Yogi government. AI-based tools are assisting in identifying high-risk pregnancies, ensuring timely referrals, and improving new-born care. Frontline workers receive simple digital alerts, enabling them to take necessary steps in time.

Non-communicable diseases, especially diabetes and hypertension, are on the rise in the state. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), around 6.5 percent of adults in the country are affected by diabetes.

In Uttar Pradesh, AI is strengthening community-level screening and early detection. Pilot projects such as retinal image analysis for identifying diabetic retinopathy have demonstrated that AI can expand the reach of screening and make referral systems more effective.

The AI model being adopted in the state is completely human-centric. Technology is being developed by keeping the experience of ASHA workers, ANMs, nurses, and doctors at the core. Initial pilot projects in the state have clearly shown that when AI solutions are aligned with ground-level needs, they are adopted seamlessly.

This is accelerating innovation through collaboration among research institutions, technology companies, and donor agencies.
The Yogi government is working towards developing Uttar Pradesh as a model state in the field of AI so that other states in the country can also follow up.

For this, emphasis is being laid on a national vision for ethical and inclusive AI in healthcare, strengthening data quality, establishing a clear framework for validating AI solutions, and capacity building.
