Chennai, Aug 2026 : In a significant development, Sangeetha, wife of actor-turned-politician and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay, has withdrawn the divorce and residency rights petitions she had filed against him before the Chengalpattu District Family Court.
The development brings to an end the legal proceedings that had drawn attention because of the high-profile status of both Vijay and Sangeetha. The couple had reportedly been living separately for some time due to personal differences.
Sangeetha had approached the Chengalpattu Family Court in December last year, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay as well as residency rights. The matter had subsequently come up for hearing on three occasions.
Considering the public profile of the couple and security-related concerns, the court had earlier exempted both from appearing physically and allowed them to participate in the proceedings through video conferencing.
The case came up for hearing again on Friday. Vijay’s counsel sought an adjournment, citing his engagement with the ongoing Tamil Nadu Assembly session. However, Sangeetha’s legal representatives opposed the request and urged the court to proceed with the scheduled hearing.
After hearing submissions from both sides, the court deferred the proceedings until the post-lunch session.
During the afternoon hearing, Sangeetha appeared before Family Court Judge Sujatha through video conference and made detailed submissions for more than 15 minutes. Following her statement, the court accepted her request to withdraw both the divorce petition and the plea seeking residency rights.
With the withdrawal of the petitions, the legal proceedings initiated by Sangeetha against Vijay have effectively come to an end. Court sources said the case was closed following her voluntary decision to withdraw the claims.
Neither Vijay nor Sangeetha has publicly disclosed the reasons behind the withdrawal of the petitions. It also remains unclear whether the couple has reached any understanding regarding their personal circumstances.
Vijay and Sangeetha have been together for nearly three decades. The couple entered into an interfaith marriage on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai.
Their first child, a son, was born on August 26, 2000, while their daughter was born in 2005.
Vijay, one of Tamil Nadu’s prominent film personalities, later entered politics and founded the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam. He has since emerged as an important political figure in the state, with his party preparing to play a significant role in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
The withdrawal of the petitions now formally closes the family court proceedings, although neither side has commented publicly on the circumstances surrounding the decision.
