New Delhi, September 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta on Saturday honoured 118 teachers for their outstanding contribution to education at ‘Shikshak Mahakumbh - State Teachers Awards 2026’, organised at Thyagaraj Stadium on the occasion of Education Day to mark the birth anniversary of eminent educationist and former President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The event recognised the teachers’ dedication, innovation and significant contribution to shaping the future of students.
118 teachers honoured across various categories
Delhi Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood, MP Ms. Bansuri Swaraj, MLAs Shri Abhay Verma, Shri Neeraj Basoya and Shri Chandan Kumar Chaudhary, among several other public representatives, Education Department Director Smt. Ankita Anand, senior officials, and teachers, principals, vice-principals, students and other dignitaries from various schools were present at the event.
A total of 118 teachers were honoured in different categories. These included 20 HoSs, 69 teachers from DoE and MCD schools, and teachers from three CM Shri Schools. Librarians, special educators and sports teachers, among others who have made notable contributions in different areas of education, were also honoured.
During the programme, NCC cadets presented a guard of honour to the Chief Minister, followed by a welcome song by a group of music teachers. Children in traditional attire also welcomed the guests. On the occasion, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the recognition was not merely an honour for the teachers’ achievements, but also for the dedication, patience and faith through which they shape the future of children every day.
Education budget and expansion of technological infrastructure
The Chief Minister said teachers are the strong foundation of society. They do not merely impart textbook knowledge to students, but also instill values, skills, confidence, a sense of duty and the right direction in life. A teacher’s influence does not remain limited to an individual student, but contributes to shaping an entire generation.
She said the Delhi government was committed to ensuring that every child in Delhi receives quality education that provides not only knowledge, but also skills, values and confidence. As part of this commitment, a budget allocation of Rs 19,148 crore has been made for education in the financial year 2026-27. At the same time, Delhi’s schools are being prepared for the future through technology and smart teaching resources.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said 170 modern language labs are being established in Delhi’s schools to strengthen students’ language and communication skills. These include 70 CM Shri Schools and 100 other government schools. Alongside this, initiatives such as Neev, Rashtraneeti and NIPUN Sankalp are being used to strengthen entrepreneurship, innovation, problem-solving, democratic values, and foundational literacy and numeracy among students.
The Delhi government is committed to ensuring that no issue concerning students and teachers remains unresolved during its tenure. Addressing Delhi’s various pending issues and longstanding systemic shortcomings is a priority for the government.
Collective efforts needed for responsible citizens and a safe childhood
The Chief Minister said lasting solutions to Delhi’s problems cannot be achieved through government efforts alone. A change in citizens’ thinking and behaviour is also necessary. She called upon teachers to instill in students values such as cleanliness, environmental protection, compliance with rules, discipline, sensitivity and helping those in need, so that the foundation of responsible citizenship is strengthened from childhood.
She said ensuring children’s safety through essential awareness about ‘good touch and bad touch’ is also an important responsibility of teachers. Describing students as the heritage of society, the Chief Minister said ensuring their safety, education and a better future is a shared responsibility of everyone.
Resolve to make Delhi free of begging
Referring to the resolve to make Delhi free of begging, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the first step is to ensure that no child is deprived of education. She appealed to teachers, institutions and citizens to make collective efforts to bring any child found out of school into the mainstream of education.
The Chief Minister said the country’s youth will play an important role in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, and that the process of making this youth force capable, skilled and responsible begins in schools and with teachers.
She expressed confidence that with the support of teachers and the Delhi government’s continued efforts, the resolve of ‘Viksit Delhi’, along with ‘Viksit Bharat’, will gain new strength and momentum.
Tireless efforts and dedication of teachers are crucial: Education Minister
Education Minister Ashish Sood said the tireless efforts and dedication of thousands of teachers have played an important role in strengthening Delhi’s education system. The objective of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is not merely to bring children to school, but to prepare them with better learning, understanding and capabilities. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government has taken significant steps towards implementing NEP 2020.
The Education Minister said the recruitment process for 10,417 teachers has been initiated to address the shortage of teachers. Provision has also been made for the recruitment of 613 special teachers so that students with special needs can receive better educational support. He said the government’s objective is to provide teachers with adequate human resources so that they can focus more effectively on students’ education and personality development.
The Education Minister said the government is continuously working not only on the academic needs of teachers, but also on issues related to their administrative, HR and personal development. Necessary directions have been issued to resolve duty-related and other service-related issues concerning guest teachers. The Education Minister expressed confidence that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, the government would make concrete progress towards resolving most HR-related issues concerning teachers by next year.
