New Delhi, October 2026: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Friday staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue inside the Parliament complex, alleging “vote theft” and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Singh was stopped by police while he was on his way to Parliament along with some supporters. Objecting to being stopped, he said the police could not prevent a sitting Member of Parliament from entering Parliament.
After some time, police allowed Singh to proceed to Parliament. He then sat in protest in front of Gandhi’s statue and raised slogans against what he described as irregularities in the electoral process. He also demanded the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.
Singh alleged that the government had deployed its entire police machinery to prevent opposition voices from being raised against what he termed “vote theft”. He said the people of the country would ultimately remove those responsible for such alleged practices from power.
Addressing supporters during the protest, Singh said he was at Gandhi’s statue on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gyanesh Kumar had worked together to carry out large-scale “vote theft” and claimed that the names of 13.37 crore people had been removed from electoral rolls across the country.
He further alleged that similar practices had been used by the BJP to gain power in legislative assemblies in different states. Singh said that when questions were being raised over the electoral process, people were allegedly being prevented from expressing their views.
He claimed that arrests were being carried out at various places and accused the government of undermining democratic processes.
Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s role in India’s freedom movement, Singh said Gandhi had mobilised people across the country against British rule. On Gandhi Jayanti, he said, he was seeking inspiration from the Mahatma to give citizens the strength to stand against what he described as authoritarianism.
Singh urged people across the country to raise their voices against alleged electoral irregularities and called upon citizens to unite against what he described as the BJP government’s “dictatorial” approach.
The AAP leader also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that democratic institutions were being undermined.
Singh appealed to citizens to raise their concerns peacefully from their respective locations and participate in efforts to protect what he described as the integrity of the electoral process.
The protest was held as opposition parties and other political groups have continued to raise questions over electoral rolls and the conduct of elections. Singh’s allegations formed the central theme of the demonstration outside Gandhi’s statue in the Parliament complex on Gandhi Jayanti.
