New Delhi, October 9: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) performance in recent Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections, asserting that the party continues to win elections despite what he described as lies and disinformation campaigns by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc.

The BJP secured victories in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam and the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly by-elections in West Bengal. Meanwhile, the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), an ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), won the Thattanchavady Assembly bypoll in Puducherry.

In the Nagaon parliamentary constituency, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma defeated Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). In West Bengal’s Nandigram Assembly constituency, BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath defeated her nearest Congress rival, Milan Pradhan. In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar defeated Golam Nabi Azad of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party.

Reacting to the results, Shah said the victories reflected the continued public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the BJP’s development-oriented agenda.

In a post on social media platform X, the Home Minister said, “The BJP, under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji, continues to win elections one after another despite the lies and disinformation campaigns run by Rahul Gandhi and the INDI Alliance.”

He added that the NDA’s victories in the by-elections in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, along with the recently held local body elections in Rajasthan and Tripura, demonstrated that voters had rejected the INDIA bloc.

Shah further alleged that opposition parties, having lost public support, questioned institutions after every electoral defeat. However, he said, voters had recognised their political approach and once again delivered a strong mandate in favour of the BJP.

“The people have once again delivered a thumping mandate, reaffirming their unwavering faith in the BJP,” Shah said.

The Home Minister congratulated West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. He also extended his congratulations to the respective state party presidents and BJP workers, acknowledging their efforts in securing the victories.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin also described the results as spectacular, saying they reaffirmed the public’s support for development and good governance under Prime Minister Modi.

In his post on X, Nabin said the results had once again demonstrated that people across the country stood firmly with the politics of development and effective governance under the Prime Minister’s leadership.

He also criticised the Opposition, saying voters had delivered a strong response to those attempting to mislead the public.

“Those who were trying to mislead the countrymen have once again been given a resounding response by the people through their votes,” Nabin said.

Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya also congratulated the winning candidates and party workers following the BJP-NDA victories in the West Bengal and Puducherry Assembly by-elections and the Assam Lok Sabha by-election.

In a post on X, Vijayvargiya said the results reflected public confidence in the country’s progress, good governance and public service under Prime Minister Modi. He added that the support would further strengthen the resolve to build a developed India.

Meanwhile, political leaders also welcomed the unopposed election of eight BJP candidates to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the eight candidates, expressing confidence that they would contribute significantly to the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed India and help accelerate the country’s progress.

In a post on X, Adityanath said he expected the newly elected members to uphold the dignity of the Upper House while working towards national development.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also hailed the BJP’s electoral gains, citing the unopposed election of the eight Rajya Sabha candidates from Uttar Pradesh, the NDA’s victory in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP’s wins in Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, and the NDA ally’s success in Thattanchavady in Puducherry.

Gupta described the results as evidence of the public’s unwavering trust in the BJP and the NDA.

She also criticised opposition forces, alleging that they prioritised appeasement, social division and political self-interest over public welfare. According to her, the election results represented a strong response from voters to such politics.

The BJP leadership has projected the results as a reaffirmation of its political strength and the NDA’s support across several states, while its leaders have linked the victories to the government’s emphasis on development, governance and the vision of a developed India.
