Armenian Forces Praise Indian-Made Akash-1S Air Defence System for Mobility, Automation and Combat Readiness

Yerevan, Aug 2026 : Armenia’s armed forces have reported highly positive feedback on the performance of India’s Akash-1S surface-to-air missile system, highlighting its mobility, advanced radar capabilities and high degree of automation during recent air-defence exercises. The assessment represents an important endorsement of the Indian-made system by its first international customer and underlines the growing role of Indian defence equipment in Armenia’s military modernisation programme.

During recent drills, Armenian personnel operating the Akash-1S reportedly praised its ability to function effectively across different geographical and weather conditions. An Armenian unit commander, speaking during a military broadcast on troop preparedness, said the system’s adaptability and mobility were particularly valuable for the country’s operational requirements.

To maintain combat readiness, Armenian crews have been putting the system through extensive field trials in different parts of the country, including deployments in the Lusian sector. The exercises are intended to familiarise personnel with the system under varying terrain and operational conditions while ensuring that crews can rapidly reposition the equipment when required.

One of the Akash-1S’s key advantages is its ability to operate as a highly mobile air-defence system. Unlike fixed missile installations, the platform is designed to accompany ground formations and rapidly establish defensive positions. Its complete battery comprises mobile missile launchers, surveillance and tracking radars, command-and-control elements and support vehicles.

This mobility gives the system a “shoot-and-scoot” capability, allowing operators to deploy, engage targets and relocate quickly. Such flexibility is particularly relevant for Armenia, where air-defence units may need to protect moving military formations as well as strategically important infrastructure.

The Akash system was developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is manufactured by Indian defence public-sector companies, including Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited. The system combines missile launchers, surveillance radars, fire-control systems and command networks into an integrated air-defence architecture.

According to information provided by Armenian operators, the radar network can track up to 60 targets simultaneously while engaging as many as 16 aerial threats. The system has a reported interception range of up to 25 kilometres and is capable of engaging targets at altitudes of up to 18 kilometres.

The Akash-1S variant incorporates an indigenous active seeker designed to improve terminal guidance and accuracy against fast-moving and manoeuvring aerial targets. This represents a significant enhancement over earlier versions of the Akash family and strengthens the system’s ability to respond to evolving airborne threats.

Another capability highlighted by Armenian crews is the system’s extensive automation. Instead of requiring operators to manually coordinate every component, the Akash battery operates through an integrated digital network connecting surveillance radars, fire-control elements and command centres.

The architecture allows information gathered by sensors to be rapidly processed and distributed to the relevant units, reducing response times and enabling coordinated engagements. Such automation is increasingly important in modern air warfare, where hostile aircraft, missiles and drones can appear with little warning and require rapid decisions.

However, the performance of any air-defence system ultimately depends on the training and preparedness of its personnel. Armenian crews underwent technical training in India before beginning domestic field operations. They have since continued intensive exercises to develop their ability to independently operate and maintain the system.

Training has included radar maintenance, missile loading and reloading, communications, command-and-control procedures and rapid redeployment under demanding battlefield conditions. The repeated exercises are aimed at ensuring that crews can operate the system effectively during prolonged or high-pressure combat situations.

For India, Armenia’s deployment of the Akash-1S represents a significant milestone in the country’s ambitions to emerge as a major global defence exporter. Armenia became the first foreign customer for the Akash system under a defence procurement agreement reportedly signed in 2022 and estimated at more than $700 million.

The Akash acquisition forms part of a broader expansion in defence cooperation between India and Armenia. Yerevan has also procured other Indian systems, including Swathi weapon-locating radars, the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) and Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers.

For India’s defence industry, operational experience gained by the Armenian military could prove valuable beyond the immediate export success. Feedback on logistics, maintenance, mobility and system performance in Armenia’s challenging terrain can provide useful inputs for future improvements to the Akash family and other Indian defence platforms.

With its combination of mobility, automation, radar coverage and multi-target engagement capability, the Akash-1S is becoming an important component of Armenia’s broader air-defence network. Its deployment is intended to provide protection against a range of airborne threats, including combat aircraft, attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The positive feedback from Armenian operators therefore represents more than a favourable assessment of a newly inducted weapon system. It also offers India an important demonstration of its growing ability to design, manufacture and export advanced military technology for demanding international customers.
