Kolkata, Sep 2026 : A case has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra under non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with police summoning the Krishnanagar MP for questioning on September 5.
Moitra has been directed to appear before the Diamond Harbour Cyber Crime Police Station in South 24 Parganas district at 11 a.m. on Saturday in connection with allegations arising from a recent social media post.
According to police, the case has been registered under Sections 196, 197, 299 and 353 of the BNS. The provisions relate to promoting enmity or ill-will between different groups, statements or actions affecting national integration and public harmony, deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and circulation of false statements, rumours or reports through electronic and social media that could lead to public mischief.
The case relates to a social media post uploaded by Moitra on September 1 in which she mentioned the names of several Indian Police Service and administrative officers. The post triggered a political controversy after the TMC MP alleged that Muslim IPS and IAS officers in West Bengal had been deliberately excluded from a programme of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in North Bengal.
Moitra specifically named Siliguri Police Commissioner Waquar Raja, STF Director General Javed Shamim and IAS officer Khalil Ahmed in her post. She alleged that minority bureaucrats and police officers had been intentionally kept away from the Union Home Minister’s programme.
Following the post, a complaint was filed at the Diamond Harbour Cyber Crime Police Station, alleging that Moitra’s remarks could promote communal hatred. Acting on the complaint, police summoned her to appear before the cyber crime unit on Saturday.
The Trinamool Congress MP had not issued a response to the complaint or the latest police summons as of Thursday.
The development comes shortly after Moitra appeared at Hogalbaria Police Station in Nadia district in connection with another case involving similar allegations. Police had questioned her for more than an hour in that matter, which was also linked to allegations of promoting communal hatred.
The latest case has added to the political controversy surrounding Moitra, who has frequently been involved in high-profile political disputes and public exchanges with opponents. The police action follows scrutiny over her social media comments concerning the alleged exclusion of minority officers from a government programme.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court recently directed the West Bengal Police to provide adequate armed security to Moitra following a security incident during her visit to her Krishnanagar constituency. The court’s direction came after eggs were allegedly thrown at the TMC MP during the visit.
The latest police case and summons are now expected to bring renewed attention to the contents of Moitra’s September 1 social media post and the allegations surrounding the participation of senior minority officials in the Union Home Minister’s programme.
The police are expected to question Moitra on the allegations contained in the complaint and seek clarification regarding the statements made in her social media post.
