Chirag Paswan Accuses CJP of Promoting Anarchy in Delhi, Rules Out CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

Patna, October 2026 : Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Sunday accused the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) of attempting to create anarchy through its protests in Delhi over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He defended the Centre’s handling of the situation and ruled out the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Speaking to reporters in Patna, Paswan said peaceful demonstrations were a legitimate democratic right but alleged that some elements were using protests to pursue their own agenda.

“Protests are legitimate when people peacefully express their views. However, when anti-social elements use agitations as a pretext to pursue their own agenda, they need to be identified,” he said.

Paswan alleged that the previous day’s demonstration was intended to promote anarchy and maintained that the Centre had acted appropriately to bring the situation under control.

He also criticised the Congress for organising demonstrations, claiming that the protests had caused inconvenience to residents of the national capital. Paswan accused CJP leaders of attempting to mislead young people and push them towards disorder, asserting that such efforts needed to be identified and stopped.

The minister further targeted the Congress over allegations of sexual assault involving a Jawaharlal Nehru University professor who is also a Congress MP, questioning the party’s response to the issue.

Paswan’s remarks marked a shift from his position on Friday, when he had questioned the unprecedented security restrictions imposed ahead of the CJP’s proposed demonstration. At the time, he asserted that “nothing can stop” the youth.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale also ruled out the possibility of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigning over the controversy. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Athawale defended the Election Commission against Opposition allegations that voters had been removed from electoral rolls to benefit the ruling party.

“Whatever agitation you do, CEC Gyanesh Kumar will not resign,” Athawale said. He also warned that protesters involved in the Delhi demonstration could face imprisonment.

Athawale argued that voter deletions had occurred across the country for various reasons and were not confined to supporters of Opposition parties. He claimed that approximately 13 crore names had been removed from electoral rolls nationally.

“Even our voters were deleted,” he said, arguing that the exercise had affected supporters of different political parties.

The controversy over the SIR exercise has intensified tensions between the ruling establishment and Opposition parties, which have demanded accountability from the Election Commission and questioned the removal of names from electoral rolls. The government’s supporters, however, have rejected allegations of politically motivated deletions.

The competing claims have kept electoral roll revision at the centre of the political debate, with the Opposition pressing for corrective measures and the ruling side defending the process.
