CJP Leaders Placed Under Preventive Arrest Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest Against CEC

Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to appear before Executive Magistrate; party denies filing Supreme Court plea over alleged detentions.

New Delhi, Oct 2026 : Delhi Police on Sunday said that Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka had been placed under preventive arrest ahead of the party’s proposed demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

According to the party’s legal affairs head, Ratna Singh, the three leaders were scheduled to appear before the Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantt Police Station. Singh said a Delhi Police official had informed her about the proceedings earlier in the morning.

In a post on X, she stated that Dipke, Ranka and Das would be produced before the magistrate and that she would visit the police station along with other advocates representing the party.

The three leaders were detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after arriving in the national capital to participate in the planned protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar was organised in the backdrop of allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party had demanded action against the Chief Election Commissioner over the alleged discrepancies.

Meanwhile, Singh denied reports circulating on social media that the CJP had approached the Supreme Court seeking the release of party leaders and members allegedly detained ahead of the demonstration.

Clarifying the party’s position, Singh said the petition being shared online had not been filed by the CJP. She added that the party was not approaching the Supreme Court and that its legal team had not approved any habeas corpus petition in the matter.

Singh also tagged a petition shared by a legal news platform on X, reiterating that the document did not represent a filing by the party.

The petition cited Article 32 of the Constitution and sought a direction to authorities to produce before the Supreme Court all persons allegedly detained in connection with the CJP’s proposed October 10 demonstration at Jantar Mantar. It also sought the immediate release of individuals whose detention was not authorised by law.

However, Singh’s clarification made it clear that the CJP had disowned the petition and was not pursuing the legal route described in the document.

Separately, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde announced that party members and supporters would again march towards Jantar Mantar on Sunday. He said the protesters would continue their agitation until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigned.

The developments come amid heightened political activity surrounding the party’s allegations over the electoral roll revision process and its planned protest in the national capital. The allegations against the Election Commission remain claims made by the party.
