New regulatory framework prescribes ground and flying training requirements for pilots and marks first step towards operationalising gyroplanes in the country
New Delhi, September 2026 : The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Tuesday notified a new regulatory framework prescribing the training requirements for pilots seeking licences to operate gyroplanes, marking an important step towards introducing the aircraft category for operations in India.
The newly promulgated Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), titled “Ground and Flying Training Syllabus for Issue of Pilot Licence for Gyroplanes”, has been issued under Section 7, Series B, Part XXI. It specifies the ground and flying training syllabus that candidates will have to complete to obtain a DGCA pilot licence in the gyroplane category.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the new CAR establishes the prescribed training framework for candidates seeking licences to fly gyroplanes and provides the regulatory foundation required for developing the segment.
Gyroplanes are a distinct category of aircraft that generate lift through a freely rotating rotor system, while forward thrust is produced by an engine-driven propeller. Unlike helicopters, their main rotor is not powered during normal flight. Instead, the rotor rotates freely as the aircraft moves forward, enabling it to generate lift.
According to the DGCA, the aircraft can be used for a range of recreational and specialised aviation activities. Potential applications include joyrides and air experience flights, as well as aerial work such as agricultural spraying, banner towing, surveillance and survey operations.
The aviation regulator said the notification of the CAR represents the first major regulatory step towards enabling gyroplane operations in India.
“The CAR prescribes the ground and flying training syllabus for candidates seeking a DGCA pilot licence in the gyroplane category,” the Ministry of Civil Aviation said.
The introduction of a formal training syllabus is expected to provide a structured pathway for aspiring gyroplane pilots and establish the basic regulatory requirements for the category. Pilot training and licensing are considered essential prerequisites before commercial and other operations involving the aircraft can expand.
The DGCA, however, noted that further steps would be required to create a complete ecosystem for gyroplane operations in the country. These include establishing dedicated training organisations capable of providing the prescribed instruction to prospective pilots.
The development of domestic manufacturing and assembly capabilities will also be important for the growth of the sector, according to the regulator.
The move comes as India continues to expand and diversify its civil aviation ecosystem, with the introduction of regulatory provisions for newer categories of aircraft forming part of this broader development.
With the training and licensing framework now notified, the next stages will involve building the required institutional, operational and manufacturing infrastructure to support gyroplane activities in the country.
