Lucknow, October 2026 : Health-related needs increase with age. In such circumstances, access to treatment, along with safe shelter, is important for elderly people living in old-age homes. With this in mind, the Social Welfare Department under the Yogi government is linking eligible elderly residents of old-age homes to the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

A total of 6,607 elderly people reside in 75 old-age homes across the state, of whom Ayushman cards have been issued to 2,551 eligible people.

The government's initiative aims to extend social security for elderly people beyond providing accommodation. Accordingly, it also emphasizes financial security alongside health protection. Currently, 4,901 eligible elderly people receive benefits under the Old Age Pension Scheme. Eligible women are also being linked with the Destitute Women Pension Scheme.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare Asim Arun said that ensuring a dignified and secure life for elderly people is a priority of the state government. He said that various social security schemes are being extended to elderly residents of old-age homes to ensure that they receive not only shelter but also financial and health security.

The department is focusing on bringing eligible residents of old-age homes under the ambit of health protection through Ayushman cards. The department is continuously advancing the process of linking eligible elderly people to the scheme. Keeping financial needs and health security in mind, 4,901 eligible elderly people are receiving benefits under the Old Age Pension Scheme.

This provides additional social security support to eligible elderly people living in old-age homes.

Social Welfare Department Director Sanjeev Singh said that the department issues necessary guidelines to link eligible elderly people with various schemes. The department is also working to provide Aadhaar cards and other necessary documents and facilities. In the financial years 2025-26 and 2026-27, 1,073 new elderly people were linked to various schemes.
