New Delhi, Aug 2026 : India on Thursday successfully test-fired the Agni-4 Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, marking another significant step in strengthening the country's strategic defence capabilities.
The Defence Ministry said the launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile. The test was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), which is responsible for managing India's strategic nuclear arsenal under the Nuclear Command Authority.
In a post on X, the Ministry of Defence said, “India successfully test-fired the Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) Agni-4 from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha on August 06, 2026.” It added that the launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters.
The Agni-4 is a two-stage, surface-to-surface ballistic missile powered by solid-fuel rocket motors. It has a reported strike range of up to 4,000 km and is designed to enhance India's long-range strategic deterrence capabilities.
The approximately 20-metre-long missile can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg and can be launched from a road-mobile launcher, providing operational flexibility and mobility. The missile, developed indigenously, was earlier referred to as Agni-2 Prime.
The latest test forms part of India's continuing programme to strengthen and modernise its strategic missile capabilities. Earlier, the country had successfully conducted trials of other members of the Agni family, including the Agni-Prime and Agni-3.
The Agni-Prime, a newer-generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile, has a reported range of approximately 1,000 to 2,000 km. Its successful trials have added another layer to India's strategic missile inventory.
The Agni series represents a key component of India's ballistic missile capability, with successive systems designed to provide different ranges and operational options. The Agni-1, Agni-2 and Agni-3 have progressively contributed to India's strategic deterrence architecture.
The latest Agni-4 launch also comes amid continued efforts to enhance India's broader nuclear triad and strategic preparedness. The test follows the reported induction of India's third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridhaman, adding to the country's sea-based nuclear deterrence capability.
Officials have described such tests as part of routine validation of India's strategic systems. The successful demonstration of Agni-4's operational and technical parameters underscores the country's continued focus on maintaining a credible and reliable strategic deterrent.
