Raipur, Aug 2026: A severely injured Indian python (Python molurus) found in the Gangrel forest area of the Dhamtari forest range has been safely rescued by the Forest Department. After receiving initial treatment in Dhamtari, the python was shifted to Nandanvan Jungle Safari in Raipur for advanced medical care and continuous monitoring, where its condition is reportedly improving under the supervision of wildlife experts.
Suspected Attack with Stone or Heavy Object
The incident took place on August 8, when a large python was found in an injured and bleeding condition in the Gangrel forest. Acting promptly on the information, a Forest Department team, with the assistance of snake rescuer Neeraj Pandey, rescued the reptile and brought it safely to the Dhamtari Forest Range Office.
In the presence of the Dhamtari Forest Range Officer and Deputy Ranger, a veterinary doctor conducted a detailed medical examination of the python. The examination revealed deep wounds on its head, tail and several other parts of its body.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the python may have been deliberately attacked with a heavy stone or another hard object. The exact circumstances surrounding the injuries, however, remain under investigation.
Treatment Under Expert Supervision at Raipur Jungle Safari
Dr Mayank Patel immediately provided first aid to the injured python and administered the necessary medicines, following which its condition stabilised.
The Deputy Ranger said the wounds were deep and required specialised treatment and continuous expert monitoring. In view of the seriousness of its injuries, the python was shifted to Jungle Safari in Raipur on Saturday night.
A team of wildlife specialists at the facility is now closely monitoring the reptile's recovery and providing the necessary treatment and care.
Forest Department Appeals for Public Cooperation
Following the incident, the Forest Department appealed to citizens to remain sensitive and cautious towards wildlife. Officials urged people not to harm or attempt to capture any injured or stray wild animal on their own.
Citizens who come across an injured or wandering wild animal have been advised to immediately inform the Forest Department or local police instead of approaching or handling the animal themselves.
The department emphasised that protecting wildlife is a collective responsibility and called upon the public to cooperate with authorities in ensuring the safety and conservation of wild animals.
