Osmania University alumna becomes 73rd Mayor of Strathfield, marking another milestone in her public service journey in Australia
Hyderabad, Sept 206 : Sandhya Reddy, a law graduate from Telangana and an alumna of Osmania University, has been elected as the 73rd Mayor of the Strathfield Council in Sydney, Australia.
Reddy was elected to the mayoral position on Tuesday and will serve a two-year term. Her election marks another significant milestone in her public and community service journey in Australia.
Originally from Mellareddygudem village in Vikarabad district of Telangana, Reddy completed her education at Osmania University and Stanley College in Hyderabad before moving to Australia in 1991.
After settling in Australia, she pursued a career in law and began practising as an immigration lawyer. She subsequently became involved in community activities as well as social and political affairs, eventually entering local government.
Reddy, who is also known as Sandy Reddy, was first elected as a councillor of the Strathfield Council in December 2021. She went on to become Deputy Mayor in September 2023, becoming the first Indian woman to hold that position in the council.
She retained her council seat in September 2025 and continued serving as a councillor until her election as mayor.
Following her election, Reddy described the new responsibility as an honour and said she was pleased to have the opportunity to serve the Strathfield local government area.
According to The Australia Today, Reddy holds a Bachelor of Law and a Master of Anthropology, along with a Graduate Certificate in Migration Law from the Australian National University. She has also operated an education and migration services practice while raising her family in Strathfield.
Her professional background in immigration law and migration services has been accompanied by extensive involvement in the local community.
Strathfield is located in Sydney’s inner west and is regarded as one of the city’s most culturally diverse local government areas. The municipality covers approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of around 46,000 people.
Reddy’s election has also drawn attention in Telangana, with Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K. T. Rama Rao congratulating her on the achievement.
In a post on X, Rama Rao described Reddy’s election as a matter of pride for Telangana and wished her success in her new role.
“Hearty congratulations to Sandy Reddy garu on being unanimously elected as the Mayor of Strathfield, Australia,” Rama Rao said.
He noted her Telangana roots and said she had achieved a distinction as the first person from India to be elected as a mayor in Australia. He also wished her a successful tenure in public service and expressed hope that she would continue to reach greater heights through her leadership and service.
Reddy’s election represents the latest chapter in a public life that has taken her from Telangana to local government in one of Australia’s major metropolitan areas. As Mayor, she will now lead the Strathfield Council for the next two years, overseeing civic administration and community affairs in one of Sydney’s most diverse municipalities.
