Jerusalem, Aug 2026 : Tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border escalated further after an Israeli airstrike killed a senior Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon, with Lebanese authorities reporting that at least four people were killed and five others wounded in the attack.
The Israeli military said on Sunday that Abu Hassan Alaa, described as a senior commander in Hezbollah’s Badr regional division, was killed late Saturday in an airstrike targeting the area of Deir al-Zahrani.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strike was carried out in response to an earlier Hezbollah drone attack targeting Israeli troops operating in southern Lebanon. Three Israeli soldiers were wounded in that attack.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes struck a two-storey building, killing at least four people and injuring five others. The latest incident adds to a series of Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire reached in 2024.
Earlier on Saturday, another Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese village of Ansar killed seven people, according to reports. The attack was described as one of the deadliest Israeli strikes in the region since the ceasefire came into effect.
The IDF also said it had killed another senior Hezbollah operative during overnight strikes in southern Lebanon. The militant was identified as Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan, a battalion commander with Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force.
The Israeli military said Hassan was targeted at a Hezbollah headquarters in Ansar, located in the Nabatieh district. The strike, it said, was carried out in response to a Hezbollah attack against Israeli forces operating in what Israel describes as a “security zone”.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said three Israeli soldiers had been seriously wounded in the Hezbollah attack. It said the military subsequently targeted the Hezbollah headquarters believed to have directed the assault.
The IDF further claimed that several other Hezbollah militants involved in planning and preparing attacks against Israeli troops were also killed. According to the military, Hassan’s family members were present inside the headquarters when it was struck.
The latest escalation comes amid continued concerns over the fragile security situation in southern Lebanon and the implementation of the existing ceasefire arrangements.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has stressed the importance of maintaining an international presence in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel said UN peacekeepers continue to operate in the region and support efforts by the parties to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which she described as the foundation for stability in southern Lebanon.
Ardiel also said UNIFIL continues to support the strengthening of the Lebanese Armed Forces and efforts to extend the authority of the Lebanese state across southern Lebanon.
She added that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has presented three options to the UN Security Council for consideration regarding the future of the international presence in the region.
