Mahtari Vandan Scheme Strengthens ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ Initiative

With financial assistance from the Chhattisgarh Government, women are managing household expenses while saving for their daughters’ education and future

Women depositing a portion of the assistance in Sukanya Samriddhi accounts

Raipur, October 2026: The Mahtari Vandan Yojana has been implemented in Chhattisgarh with the objective of promoting women’s financial independence, continuously improving their health and nutritional status, and strengthening their decisive role within families. The scheme also aims to address discrimination, inequality and lack of awareness against women in society, improve their health and nutritional standards, and promote financial self-reliance and women’s empowerment. Under the scheme, eligible married women are provided financial assistance of ₹1,000 every month.

The Chhattisgarh Government officially launched the Mahtari Vandan Yojana on March 1, 2024, and it was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10, 2024. The Prime Minister has said that Modi’s guarantee means a guarantee that promises will be fulfilled.

All eligible married women in the state are being covered under the scheme. Widows, divorced women and women who have been abandoned by their husbands are also receiving its benefits.

The financial assistance provided under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana is helping women meet household requirements while also creating opportunities to secure their daughters’ futures. Women are depositing a portion of the assistance in Sukanya Samriddhi accounts so that they can build financial support for their daughters’ higher education and other future needs. This initiative is strengthening Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ at the grassroots level.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said that respecting women and ensuring their economic empowerment are not merely schemes or programmes for his government, but key priorities of good governance.

He said the government believes that when a woman in a family becomes economically empowered, it has a positive impact on the entire household. Her participation in decisions relating to children’s education and nutrition, family health and the future becomes stronger. Through the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, the government is providing financial strength to mothers and sisters and empowering them with the confidence to make their own decisions.

For Pramila Potami, a resident of Bodri village in Dantewada district, saving money for her daughter’s education was earlier difficult. The regular monthly assistance under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana has now made it possible for her to save.

Pramila says, “Our income is not enough to put aside any savings. The money received under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana is a great help. I deposit a portion of this amount in a Sukanya Samriddhi account, which will be useful for my daughter’s education in the future.”

Dantewada in South Bastar remained affected by Naxal violence for a long time. In such a region, efforts to save for a daughter’s education reflect changing aspirations and offer renewed hope for a better future. Like Pramila, several other women are also setting aside a portion of their monthly assistance as savings in their daughters’ names.

The scheme is helping women become financially self-reliant and develop additional sources of income, enabling them to contribute financially to their families. It is also promoting women’s empowerment by increasing awareness about their rights and helping them access those rights.

Meena Nishad of Raveli village in Raipur district has also opened a Sukanya Samriddhi account for her daughter, Mahima. She says, “I receive ₹1,000 every month under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana. I deposit this amount in my daughter’s Sukanya Samriddhi account. I want these savings to support her education and other future needs.”

Anju Kushwaha from Parri village in Pratappur block of Surajpur district is also saving in a similar manner. She deposits a portion of her monthly assistance in her daughter’s Sukanya account and uses the remaining amount for household expenses. According to her, regular financial assistance has increased her confidence that she can save at least a small amount for the future.

Similarly, Deepali Markam of Baghmara village in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district uses the assistance to meet her children’s school-related needs and save for her daughter’s future. She says every parent wants their children to receive a good education and progress in life, but saving for the future is not easy when household resources are limited. The monthly assistance is helping her contribute towards her children’s education and build savings for her daughter.

‘Women of Chhattisgarh are our pride’: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has said, “The women of Chhattisgarh are our pride.”

Through the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, the good governance government is providing financial assistance of ₹1,000 every month, amounting to ₹12,000 annually, thereby strengthening the dignity, self-respect and self-reliance of mothers and sisters across the state.

On October 8, 2026, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai transferred more than ₹632.40 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into the bank accounts of over 67 lakh women as the 32nd instalment of the scheme. So far, more than ₹20,708 crore has been provided to women beneficiaries through the Mahtari Vandan Yojana.

Through DBT, the government is transferring financial assistance to beneficiaries across the state, helping mothers and sisters become economically empowered. The number of beneficiaries in some of the districts includes:

  • Raipur: 5,13,534 beneficiaries

  • Bilaspur: 4,11,310 beneficiaries

  • Durg: 3,89,507 beneficiaries

  • Balodabazar-Bhatapara: 3,19,815 beneficiaries

  • Mahasamund: 3,12,162 beneficiaries

Launched in 2015 under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana provides an opportunity to save for the future of girl children. Through this scheme, parents can deposit money to meet future requirements such as their daughters’ education and marriage.

The experiences of these women demonstrate that regular financial assistance is enabling them to begin planned savings for their daughters’ education and future.
