Falkawn, October 2026: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday inaugurated the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Unit at Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMC&H) in Falkawn. The facility has been established with an investment of ₹3.7 crore through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding from SBI Funds Management Limited, in collaboration with the state government and Doctors For You.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi Tlau, Dr Rajat Grover, Chief People and Sustainability Officer at SBI Funds Management Ltd, and Dr Rajat Jain, President of Doctors For You.
Addressing the gathering, Lalduhoma said Health and Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii had been making sustained efforts to ensure that super-speciality healthcare services were available within Mizoram.
He said the CTVS Unit was the outcome of initiatives taken following a high-level meeting chaired by him on November 27, 2024, and his visit to ZMC&H on November 28, 2024. Subsequently, discussions were held with SBI Funds Management and Doctors For You to secure financial and technical support for the project.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to both organisations for their cooperation, saying their support had enabled the state to inaugurate the facility.
Highlighting the hospital's recent progress, Lalduhoma said ZMC&H had begun vascular surgery services in March this year. On August 19, 2026, the hospital successfully performed its first major open-heart surgery, marking a significant milestone for Mizoram's healthcare sector.
The procedure was conducted under the guidance of Dr Mary Hmingthantluangi, in collaboration with Dr Intekhab Alam of Apollo Excel Hospital, Guwahati, and the ZMC&H operation theatre team.
The Chief Minister said the government was committed to further upgrading the medical college and hospital. Under the State's Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) initiative, plans are underway to expand the hospital's dialysis facilities. The existing four dialysis units are proposed to be supplemented with 21 additional units at an estimated cost of ₹5.6 crore.
He also said work was being undertaken to improve internal roads and connectivity within the hospital complex.
Lalduhoma identified several other facilities that the government hoped to develop at ZMC&H, including an auditorium, a catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab), a Level-2 in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) centre, a neurosurgery unit, a radiodiagnosis and imaging department, and the procurement of high-end ultrasound machines.
He said the government would pursue these projects in phases, depending on the availability of funds.
Emphasising the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility funding, the Chief Minister observed that Mizoram received comparatively limited CSR support despite the potential to implement several beneficial projects with relatively modest investments.
He appealed to SBI Funds Management and Doctors For You to continue supporting development initiatives in Mizoram and encouraged other organisations to contribute through CSR programmes.
The programme was chaired by Professor Zoramthara Zadeng, Director of ZMC&H. Dr Rajat Jain outlined the implementation of the project, while Dr Rajat Grover spoke about its background and progress. Both expressed their commitment to continuing initiatives for Mizoram's development.
Professor Lalnunmawi Sailo, Medical Superintendent of ZMC&H, delivered the vote of thanks, bringing the programme to a close.
