Mumbai, Oct 2026 : Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, is set to step down from the boards of six major Tata Group companies on November 12, when he turns 70, in accordance with the conglomerate’s retirement policy for non-executive directors.
The transition will mark a significant change in the leadership structure of the salt-to-software conglomerate, where Noel Tata holds several important positions across listed and unlisted businesses. His departure from the operating-company boards is expected to trigger changes in leadership and succession planning at multiple group entities.
Noel Tata currently serves as non-executive chairman of Trent, Voltas, Tata Investment Corporation and Tata International, among other group companies. He also holds vice-chairman positions at Tata Steel and Titan Company.
Despite stepping down from these boards, Noel Tata will continue as a nominee director of Tata Trusts on the board of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. Tata Trusts collectively owns around 66 per cent of Tata Sons, giving the charitable trust institutions a significant role in the group’s ownership and governance structure.
His continued presence on the Tata Sons board will allow him to remain involved in the conglomerate’s broader governance even after relinquishing his positions at several operating companies.
Noel Tata will also continue his association with Trent Hypermarket Ltd, the joint venture between Trent and British retailer Tesco. The venture operates the Star Bazaar and Star Daily retail chains.
However, formal announcements regarding successors to several of his other board positions and leadership responsibilities are yet to be made.
Tata Group succession and corporate governance
The retirement comes amid continuing attention on Tata Group governance, board appointments and the future direction of Tata Sons. Noel Tata has been an influential figure within the group, particularly through his leadership roles in retail and other businesses, as well as his position at Tata Trusts.
The conglomerate’s internal governance framework stipulates a retirement age of 70 for non-executive, non-independent directors and 65 for executive directors. The planned exits reflect the application of these age-related retirement norms.
Corporate governance practices in large business groups often rely on clearly defined retirement policies to provide a structured framework for board renewal, succession planning and leadership transitions.
Noel Tata’s departure from the six company boards will require changes at Trent, Voltas, Tata International and Tata Investment Corporation, as well as new arrangements for the vice-chairman positions at Tata Steel and Titan Company.
The transition represents an important organisational development for the Tata Group, even as Noel Tata retains his roles at Tata Trusts and Tata Sons. The appointments of successors will be closely watched for their implications for board continuity, corporate governance and the future leadership of the group’s businesses.
