Opposition Leaders March to Rajghat, Intensify Protest Over SIR, Demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

New Delhi, Oct 2026 : The Congress-led Opposition on Thursday continued its protest against alleged discrepancies in the Election Commission’s (EC) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge leading a march to Rajghat.

Hundreds of Opposition leaders and party workers gathered at Rajghat in the evening as the INDIA bloc intensified its campaign over what it has termed “vote chori” and discussed its next course of action. The Opposition has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

The march came after senior Congress and INDIA bloc leaders held a luncheon meeting in Connaught Place, where they discussed ways to intensify their protest and coordinate their future programmes.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, speaking at Rajghat, reiterated the Opposition’s demand for Kumar’s resignation and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to the concerns being raised by people and Opposition parties.

Earlier, speaking to reporters after the lunch meeting, Kharge said the Opposition wanted to draw attention to what it described as an attack on citizens’ voting rights. He alleged that the rights secured through India’s freedom struggle were being weakened and that the Election Commission’s actions were affecting people’s right to vote.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Congress leaders have been participating in protests in the national capital for the past two days. The Opposition has accused the Election Commission of irregularities in the SIR exercise and has repeatedly sought accountability from the poll panel.

The Congress and its allies have alleged that the electoral-roll revision process could result in eligible voters being excluded from electoral lists. They have also accused the Election Commission of acting in coordination with the BJP-led government, allegations that the ruling side and the poll panel have rejected.

The Opposition has sought greater transparency in the electoral-roll revision process and has called for steps to ensure that eligible citizens are not deprived of their voting rights.

The protests have brought together several INDIA bloc leaders and Congress workers in Delhi, with the Opposition indicating that the agitation will continue as it seeks answers from the Election Commission over the SIR exercise.

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a fledgling political outfit comprising students and activists, has announced a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10. The group plans to raise concerns over what it describes as “vote theft” and alleged electoral malpractices.

The Opposition’s continued mobilisation is expected to keep the SIR issue at the centre of political debate in the national capital, with Congress and its allies preparing to announce their next course of action in the coming days.
