AIMIM chief says party is prepared for 2027 Assembly polls, seeks greater Muslim political representation and calls for Opposition parties to work together
New Delhi, September 2026 : All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said his party will announce its decision on a possible alliance for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections by October 2, while asserting that the organisation is fully prepared to contest the polls and expand its political presence in the state.
Speaking to the media, Owaisi said discussions were underway with non-BJP parties and that AIMIM was open to working with political groups that share common objectives. He also argued that Opposition parties should consider joining hands, saying that no single political entity could challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its own.
“We will announce whom we will form an alliance with by October 2,” Owaisi said, setting a specific timeline for the party's next announcement.
The AIMIM chief has been stepping up his party's organisational and public outreach activities in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Addressing a gathering in Kanpur, he said AIMIM would continue strengthening its organisation across the state irrespective of the outcome of alliance discussions.
Owaisi also emphasised the issue of political representation for Muslims in Uttar Pradesh. He argued that the community, which constitutes a significant section of the state's population, should have greater political agency and leadership emerging from within the community.
“We are fully prepared and making preparations, and we hope that this time, God-willing, our candidates will win and enter the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly,” he said.
According to Owaisi, AIMIM's objective is to establish a stronger political presence in the state and provide representation to sections that he believes have remained politically marginalised. He said the party was conducting public meetings and visiting constituencies as part of its preparations for the election.
Alliance Talks
Owaisi's latest remarks indicate that AIMIM is seeking electoral partners while simultaneously preparing to contest independently if an alliance does not materialise. The party's alliance strategy is expected to become clearer after the October 2 deadline.
The AIMIM chief has made an open appeal to parties opposed to another BJP government in Uttar Pradesh to engage with his party. He has said AIMIM is willing to work with “like-minded” political organisations and has argued that Opposition parties need to cooperate rather than contest separately.
He has also referred to AIMIM's experience during the Bihar elections, saying the party had previously approached several Opposition parties for an alliance but its proposal did not materialise. Owaisi has indicated that the Uttar Pradesh discussions should take those earlier experiences into account.
Focus on Political Representation
Owaisi has repeatedly raised the issue of Muslim representation during his Uttar Pradesh campaign. He has criticised successive governments over what he describes as inadequate attention to the community's socio-economic and educational concerns.
At the same time, he has criticised both the BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP) on various political and governance issues during his recent public meetings. His remarks come as parties across Uttar Pradesh intensify preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.
For AIMIM, the immediate focus is now on finalising its electoral strategy. The party will have to determine whether to enter into an alliance, identify potential partners and subsequently negotiate issues such as seat-sharing.
Until that decision is announced, Owaisi has made clear that AIMIM will continue its organisational expansion and public outreach across Uttar Pradesh. The October 2 deadline is therefore expected to provide greater clarity on the party's alliance plans and its broader strategy for the 2027 Assembly elections.
