Tehran, Aug 2026 : Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei on Saturday to discuss the country’s domestic challenges, economic situation and the ongoing conflict, Iranian media reported.
According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency, the meeting focused extensively on issues affecting the country, particularly measures to address the livelihood needs of the Iranian people. The two leaders also reviewed the prevailing security and conflict situation and discussed the challenges facing Iran in the period ahead.
Their discussions reportedly covered a broad range of economic and strategic issues, including the country’s resources, government expenditure, energy requirements and economic engagement with foreign nations.
The meeting comes at a time when Iran is facing mounting economic and geopolitical pressures. Pezeshkian has previously described the situation as among the most difficult periods for the country, citing intensified banking sanctions, restrictions on international financial transactions, maritime pressures and the continuing conflict.
Earlier this week, Pezeshkian said communication with Khamenei had become “very difficult” under the prevailing circumstances, but described the Supreme Leader’s presence as a major source of strength for Iran. He stressed that the country remained committed to moving forward despite the challenges.
In an interview published on the website of his office, Pezeshkian said Iran had continued functioning despite the killing of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in an attack on February 28. He said the country had subsequently selected a new leader and that the leadership transition had enabled Iran to continue pursuing its national objectives.
Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, was selected as Iran’s Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts in early March, according to Iranian reports.
The latest meeting between the President and Supreme Leader also comes amid uncertainty over Iran’s diplomatic engagement with the United States.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that Tehran is currently not engaged in direct negotiations with Washington. He said intermediaries were continuing efforts to identify a way to restart talks, but stressed that Iran would not agree to resume negotiations until the United States addresses what Tehran considers violations of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding.
Araghchi said Iran expects Washington to make amends for the alleged breaches before any new negotiations can begin.
The developments underline the complex challenges confronting Iran as its leadership seeks to manage domestic economic pressures, the continuing conflict and strained relations with the United States. The Pezeshkian-Khamenei meeting is expected to be closely watched for indications of Iran’s future economic, security and diplomatic direction.
