Reflecting on the Canaanite woman, the Pope urges Christians to embrace humility, listen to God’s work and break down barriers of discrimination
Castel Gandolfo, Aug 2026 : Pope Leo XIV, addressing pilgrims gathered for the Sunday Angelus in Castel Gandolfo, called on Christians and the Church to remain open to God’s work beyond established boundaries, drawing inspiration from the Gospel account of the Canaanite woman who sought healing for her suffering daughter.
Reflecting on the Sunday Gospel, the Pope recalled the story of a foreign woman who approached Jesus with unwavering faith and pleaded for help for her tormented daughter. Her persistence, despite repeated obstacles, ultimately led Jesus to praise her faith and grant her request.
Pope Leo began his reflection by referring to the previous day’s Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The feast, he said, invites the Church to contemplate Mary’s inseparable bond with her Son, a union of body and soul that even death could not break.
He explained that every Sunday reminds Christians of the fulfilment promised to those who follow Christ. Jesus’ resurrection, he stressed, should not be understood merely as an event belonging to the past but as a source of new life that continues to draw believers closer to Him.
A Faith That Crossed Boundaries
Turning to the Canaanite woman, Pope Leo noted that she was a foreigner and did not belong to the people of Israel. Yet she approached Jesus with the confidence of someone who already shared a deep relationship with Him.
Although she and Jesus had probably never met, faith had somehow already taken root within her. Importantly, the woman did not ask for anything for herself. Her plea was entirely for her suffering daughter, placing her trust in Jesus and recognising Him as the Messiah and descendant of David.
The Gospel account, however, makes clear that her journey was not easy. The disciples considered her a nuisance and wanted her to go away. Jesus initially appeared reluctant to respond to her request.
But the encounter eventually took an unexpected turn. Pope Leo explained that Jesus, faithful to His mission, allowed Himself to be moved by what He saw and heard. He finally praised the woman, declaring, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”
‘God’s Table Is Set for Everyone’
Pope Leo said the episode carries a powerful message for the Church in the modern world. The Church, he stressed, must be willing to be surprised by God’s work and should carry Christ’s peace beyond familiar or established boundaries.
Divine grace, he noted, can precede the Church’s mission and work within the conscience of individuals. Every encounter, including those that challenge existing plans or expectations, therefore requires Christians to listen carefully and remain open to what God may be communicating.
The Pope said the Canaanite woman offers believers lessons in both humility and determination. Her faith demonstrates that “God’s table is set for everyone” and that nobody should be left with merely crumbs, because every person has a place in the Father’s house.
He warned that inequalities, discrimination and barriers that undermine the dignity of people as children of God should therefore be regarded as unacceptable.
Concluding his reflection, Pope Leo described the Church as the Church of Jesus Christ living in a troubled world that desperately seeks peace. He invited the faithful to seek Mary’s intercession and recalled the Magnificat as “the strongest and most innovative hymn ever articulated.”
The Pope said the Magnificat belongs to one who sees reality through God’s eyes and, because of that vision, never loses hope and responds to the world with charity.
