New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Indian chess sensation Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour, defeating American star Fabiano Caruana 15-13 in a thrilling final at the Saint Louis Chess Club in the United States.
The 21-year-old Chennai-born grandmaster produced a remarkable comeback after falling behind in the opening phase of the championship match. The Grand Chess Tour finale tests players across all three formats of the game — classical, rapid and blitz — making consistency and adaptability crucial for success.
Praggnanandhaa endured a difficult start in the classical segment, losing 3-9 to Caruana. However, the Indian star responded emphatically in rapid chess, completely turning the contest around with an 8-0 victory. The final then went down to the blitz section, where the two players were locked at 4-4. Praggnanandhaa's comeback ensured a 15-13 aggregate victory and the prestigious GCT title.
The scoring system awards six points for a classical win and three for a draw. In rapid chess, players receive four points for a victory and two for a draw, while blitz wins are worth two points and draws earn one point.
Praggnanandhaa's triumph also brought a substantial financial reward. The Indian received $200,000 for winning the tournament, while Caruana earned $125,000 as runner-up. American Wesley So finished third and collected $75,000, while Germany's Vincent Keymer received $50,000 for fourth place.
The Indian grandmaster had earlier booked his place in the final with an impressive 19-9 semifinal victory over Keymer. In the other semifinal, Caruana defeated Wesley So 18-12 to set up the championship clash with Praggnanandhaa.
The victory caps an impressive rise for Praggnanandhaa, who became a Grandmaster at just 13 years of age in 2018. He currently has a classical rating of 2750 and was ranked 12th in the classical category in the August 2026 FIDE rankings.
Praggnanandhaa, who is supported by the Adani Group, topped the 2026 Grand Chess Tour season following the conclusion of the regular events. The season-ending knockout competition was held at the Saint Louis Chess Club from August 21 to 28.
The Indian had entered the grand finale as the No. 1 seed, having finished among the four highest-ranked full-tour players during the regular season. Wesley So was seeded second, Caruana third and Keymer fourth.
His historic victory not only adds another major achievement to his rapidly growing career but also marks a landmark moment for Indian chess. Praggnanandhaa's success comes as Indian players continue to make their presence felt at the highest levels of international chess.
The top three finishers in the Grand Chess Tour finale — Praggnanandhaa, Caruana and Wesley So — also secured invitations to the 2027 Grand Chess Tour, giving the Indian star another opportunity to defend his title and further strengthen his position among the world's elite players.
