Qatari mediators may hold separate discussions with Tehran and Washington as efforts intensify to end hostilities and revive nuclear negotiations
Doha, Sept 2026 : Qatari mediators are expected to hold separate discussions with Iranian and US representatives on Monday or Tuesday as diplomatic efforts gather pace to end the ongoing conflict and explore a possible framework for renewed negotiations.
An official familiar with the negotiations told Reuters that the discussions are likely to centre on an amended version of a seven-day proposal put forward by Iran, which US President Donald Trump had earlier rejected.
The Qatari mediators are expected to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who remains in New York. The identities of those expected to participate in discussions on behalf of the United States have not been disclosed.
Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency later confirmed that Araqchi was scheduled to meet the Qatari mediators in New York on Monday morning. It said the talks would examine “the latest proposals and views regarding the current situation”.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei later told state media that Araqchi's stay in New York had not been extended and that the foreign minister would return to Tehran as originally planned. Baghaei did not comment on the proposed meeting with the Qatari mediators.
Under Iran's seven-day proposal, hostilities in Iran and Lebanon would end, billions of dollars in Iranian assets would be unfrozen, sanctions on Iranian oil would be lifted and the US blockade on Iranian ports would be removed.
In return, Tehran would allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, while Iran and the United States would resume negotiations over Tehran's nuclear programme.
Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected the Iranian proposal, arguing that Tehran was seeking a quick agreement because of the severe economic pressure it was facing.
However, in an interview with Axios on Sunday, Trump said he expected US negotiators to engage in further discussions during the week, keeping open the possibility of continued diplomatic contacts.
Araqchi said on Sunday that Iran had not formally received any communication from mediators conveying a US rejection of its proposal. He said Tehran was waiting for Washington to provide its definitive position before deciding on its next steps.
The diplomatic push comes as Qatar seeks to facilitate communication between Tehran and Washington and help identify common ground for ending hostilities.
The talks also reflect broader efforts to revive negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme, with regional mediators attempting to create conditions for dialogue between the two sides amid continuing tensions.
