Roshibina Devi Wins Silver as India Claim Wushu Medal at Asian Games

Nagoya, Sep 2026 : India’s Roshibina Devi signed off from the Asian Games 2026 with a silver medal after losing to China’s Xiaoyu Zhang in the women’s 60kg Wushu final here on Thursday.

Roshibina went down 0-2 to Zhang in the gold-medal bout but added another Asian Games medal to her impressive record. The silver is her third medal at the continental event, following a bronze at the 2018 Jakarta Games and another silver at the 2023 Hangzhou edition.

Her latest achievement also took India’s overall Wushu medal tally at the Asian Games to 11, comprising one gold, two silver and eight bronze medals.

India have won 14 medals at the ongoing Games so far, including one gold, six silver and seven bronze.

Roshibina began her campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Macao’s Chu Man Sin in the quarterfinals, a result that assured her of a medal. She then defeated Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas 2-0 in the semifinal to book her place in the title clash.

However, Zhang proved too strong in the final as the Chinese fighter secured a 2-0 victory to claim the gold, leaving Roshibina with the silver.

Hailing from a farming family in Kwasiphai village of Manipur’s Bishnupur district, Roshibina trains in the women’s Sanda 60kg category at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence in Imphal under coach Maibam Premkumar Singh.

She has established herself as one of India’s leading Wushu athletes. After winning bronze at the 2018 Asian Games, she improved her performance at Hangzhou in 2023, winning silver and becoming only the second Indian Wushu athlete to claim a silver medal at the Asian Games.

Her achievements have also earned national and international recognition. Roshibina is an Arjuna Award recipient, while the International Wushu Federation has honoured her with its Female Wushu Athlete of the Year award in the Sanda category.

Her participation at the 2026 Games, however, came after an unexpected turn in the selection process. Roshibina initially lost to Divyanshi Choudhary in the selection trials and was not included in the seven-member Wushu squad approved by the Sports Ministry in August.

She was subsequently included in the team after Divyanshi was ruled out because of an injury.

Divyanshi later alleged foul play, maintained that she was fit to compete and accused the federation of favouring Roshibina, who had initially finished fourth in the trials. Those allegations remain contested.
