Srinagar, Aug 2026 : Srinagar has been placed under heightened security ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, with authorities putting in place a multi-layered security arrangement across the city, particularly around Bakshi Stadium, the venue for the main August 15 function.
Security agencies have intensified random checking and frisking of vehicles and pedestrians, while drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring are being used extensively to keep a close watch on sensitive areas. Additional security personnel have also been deployed at key locations and along important routes leading to the stadium.
Bakshi Stadium and its surrounding areas have been brought under a comprehensive security grid. Multiple checkpoints have been established on roads leading to the venue, with security personnel conducting detailed inspections of vehicles and people entering the area.
A senior police officer overseeing the arrangements said the security measures had been significantly strengthened this year in view of the prevailing security situation.
“We have put in place a multi-tier security arrangement covering the entire city, with special focus on Bakshi Stadium and other sensitive locations. Random checking and frisking are being carried out round the clock. Drones are also being extensively used for real-time surveillance of the stadium complex and nearby areas,” the officer said.
Security forces have simultaneously intensified search and sanitisation operations in different parts of Srinagar based on available intelligence inputs. Police, Central Armed Police Forces and other security agencies are coordinating these operations to identify and neutralise possible threats before the national celebrations.
A senior CAPF officer said such operations were being conducted in a calibrated manner, with the primary objective of ensuring that no disruptive elements could interfere with the Independence Day programme.
Additional police and CAPF contingents have been deployed across the city, while night patrolling has also been intensified. Security personnel are maintaining strict surveillance at Srinagar's entry and exit points, with vehicles and passengers being subjected to increased checks.
Public places, including bus stands, taxi stands and other transport hubs, are also witnessing enhanced frisking and verification measures. Authorities have asked security personnel to maintain vigilance while ensuring that the movement of ordinary citizens is not unnecessarily disrupted.
Officials said the security arrangements would be further strengthened as August 15 approaches. The various agencies involved in the security operation are maintaining close coordination to ensure that the Independence Day celebrations in Srinagar are conducted peacefully and without incident.
The heightened security comes as authorities prepare to host the main national function at Bakshi Stadium, where officials are expecting participation from government representatives, security personnel and members of the public.
