Specialists Successfully Remove 26-Week Fetus-Sized Broad Ligament Fibroid, Giving Woman a New Lease of Life
Raipur, Aug 2026: The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Government Medical College, Rajnandgaon, has successfully performed a complex and challenging surgery, demonstrating the excellence of specialised healthcare services available in the district. Expert doctors successfully removed a giant broad ligament fibroid (tumour) that had developed outside a woman’s uterus, giving her a new hope for a healthy life.
Dr Meena Armo, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, said the tumour was a broad ligament fibroid, a non-cancerous growth. Unlike conventional fibroids that develop inside the uterus, this tumour was located outside the uterus on the left side. Its size was approximately equivalent to that of a 26-week-old foetus, making the surgery particularly complicated.
She explained that the presence of the ureter and major blood vessels around the tumour made the procedure highly challenging and required considerable surgical expertise and precision.
According to Dr Armo, the patient's ultrasound and CT scan reports had raised the possibility of uterine cancer, following which a staging laparotomy had been planned. However, after the abdominal incision was made during surgery, doctors discovered that the growth was not cancerous but a broad ligament fibroid.
The specialist team then proceeded with extreme caution and successfully removed the large tumour. Following the surgery, samples of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and tumour were sent to the laboratory for necessary pathological examination.
The patient's condition is currently stable, and she is recovering rapidly following the successful procedure.
