New Delhi, October 2026 : Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Monday reiterated that the doors of the Supreme Court are open to every citizen and that grievances will be heard in accordance with the law, with relief granted to those legally entitled to it. His remarks came after he declined a request from leaders of the Congress-led INDIA bloc for a meeting ahead of their proposed march to the apex court.
Speaking to reporters, the CJI confirmed that he had received a letter from the Opposition leaders and had responded to it on Sunday night.
“I received their letter yesterday and replied to it last night. The letter was dated the day before yesterday, but I was away, so I received it yesterday. I have given certain reasons in my reply and expressed my inability to meet them,” he said, adding that he had maintained the confidentiality of the correspondence.
The CJI advised reporters to seek details of the letter from the leaders who had submitted it.
Emphasising the accessibility of the judiciary, Surya Kant said any citizen, including an elected representative, could approach the Supreme Court by filing a petition.
“The doors of the Supreme Court are open to everyone. Anyone can file a petition, whether they are an ordinary citizen or a member of an elected body. Every citizen of India has the right to approach us. We will hear their grievances in accordance with the law and ensure that those entitled to relief receive it,” he said.
Earlier, the CJI had declined the INDIA bloc’s request for an administrative meeting, advising its leaders to pursue their concerns through the established judicial process. According to reports, he conveyed that the issues the Opposition intended to raise were already sub judice and being heard by the Supreme Court.
The CJI reportedly maintained that the court could not meet a delegation representing a political party at the administrative level in the manner requested, stressing that its role was to hear petitions and deliver judgments in accordance with the law.
The INDIA bloc’s proposed march to the Supreme Court was expected to proceed on Monday despite the refusal. The demonstration is part of a broader Opposition campaign seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has described the proposed march as an initiative extending beyond party politics, saying it was “not of a political party, but of all Indians”.
Gandhi has alleged that the government benefited from the SIR exercise, which has become a major point of confrontation between Opposition parties and the Election Commission. The Opposition has raised concerns over the deletion of names from electoral rolls and demanded measures to safeguard voters’ rights.
Last Friday, the INDIA bloc submitted a charter of demands to President Droupadi Murmu, setting out four demands related to electoral reforms and alleged vote manipulation.
These include the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and action concerning the SIR exercise, alongside demands aimed at addressing alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
The Opposition’s campaign has intensified the political debate over electoral roll revisions. The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has indicated that grievances must be placed before it through formal legal procedures, where they can be examined under the applicable law.
