Washington, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he was secretly moved from Air Force One to another military aircraft while in Turkey last month after officials warned of a potential threat to his life.
Trump’s admission came after reports revealed that the unusual security operation took place on July 8, when he was in Turkey as part of his international travel. According to the reports, Trump was covertly removed from Air Force One before the aircraft departed, while journalists and several senior officials remained aboard the presidential plane.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said security officials had instructed him to use a different aircraft because of a potential threat. He said he followed their advice without seeking extensive details about the nature of the danger.
“They wanted me to go in a different flight, a different plane — equal safety, but they wanted me to do it, so I do it,” Trump said. “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn't really ask too much about it.”
The operation was first reported by The Washington Post, which said Trump had been transferred from Air Force One to a smaller US Air Force aircraft in a highly discreet manoeuvre. Reports indicated that he exited the presidential aircraft through a cargo container mounted on a catering or supply vehicle before boarding the alternative plane.
Trump had initially boarded Air Force One in full public view, with photographers and television cameras recording his departure. Images showed supply containers positioned near the aircraft. However, according to the reports, the president subsequently entered one of the containers and was transported away from the presidential jet.
The operation reportedly left around a dozen journalists travelling aboard Air Force One unaware that the president was no longer on the aircraft. The reporters remained aboard the plane and departed Turkey despite concerns about a possible Iranian threat.
The incident prompted criticism from some members of the travelling press corps, with journalists questioning why they had not been informed about the security operation. Some complained that they had effectively been used as decoys without their knowledge, while others criticised the White House for withholding information.
Trump, however, appeared to downplay the danger and said he believed the aircraft he eventually travelled on could have been more vulnerable.
“I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk,” Trump told reporters, suggesting that an adversary might have been more likely to target that aircraft.
Report of Possible Missile Threat
The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel had warned US officials about the possibility of a shoulder-launched missile attack against Air Force One. Such weapons, commonly known as man-portable air-defence systems, can pose a serious threat to aircraft operating at relatively low altitudes.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio was reportedly among the senior officials and staff members who remained aboard Air Force One after Trump had been moved.
Messages sent by journalists travelling on the presidential aircraft also reportedly noted an unusual Secret Service instruction requiring window shades to remain closed during takeoff. Such precautions are generally associated with heightened security concerns, particularly in areas where aircraft could face hostile threats.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called for Congress to receive a briefing on the reported Iranian threat against Trump and the extraordinary measures reportedly taken to move him out of Turkey.
“Any consequential president has a lot of threats,” Trump said when questioned about the security concerns. He added that he generally does not worry about threats against him.
Security Concerns During NATO Trip
Trump’s Turkey episode occurred during an international trip that had already attracted considerable attention because of unusual aircraft arrangements.
During his journey to the NATO summit, Trump travelled aboard a luxury Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar and modified for presidential use. However, reports indicated that the aircraft was not equipped with the full range of missile-defence systems associated with the traditional Air Force One fleet.
The older presidential aircraft was therefore reportedly brought into use for part of the journey.
Trump had previously said that the Qatar-provided aircraft was being sent ahead for US troops in Britain to tour. During a stop in Britain, however, he returned to the Qatar-gifted aircraft for his journey back to Washington.
At the time, Trump also responded to questions about the requirement for journalists to keep window shades closed, joking that they were probably on a dangerous flight because of “the sleaze bags” the administration had to deal with.
The latest revelation has renewed debate over presidential security, transparency and the risks faced by members of the travelling press corps.
There is historical precedent for highly secretive presidential travel arrangements. In 2000, President Bill Clinton reportedly switched aircraft during a journey from India to Pakistan, with a decoy plane carrying Secret Service personnel used as part of the security operation.
President Joe Biden’s 2023 visit to Ukraine was also conducted under extraordinary secrecy because of security concerns. His journey involved a lengthy combination of air and rail travel, although a reporter and photographer accompanied him.
Trump’s confirmation nevertheless provides an unusual glimpse into the security measures surrounding presidential travel and highlights the extent to which potential threats can alter even carefully planned international movements.
