Washington, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump has ordered the federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, arguing that the Great Lakes waterway is of major economic, strategic and environmental importance to the United States and that Washington plays a leading role in protecting and maintaining the region.
Under an executive order, the US Interior Secretary has been directed to complete the renaming process within 30 days in coordination with the federal Board on Geographic Names. The directive applies specifically to the US federal government and its official references to the lake.
Lake Ontario is a binational body of water shared by the United States and Canada, with the international border running through the lake. The executive order does not require Canada, the province of Ontario, international organisations or private mapping companies to adopt the proposed name.
In the order, Trump argued that the United States has a particularly important role in protecting the Great Lakes and maintaining their accessibility for commerce, recreation and other activities.
“The United States is the greatest protector of the Great Lakes, including the body of water currently known as Lake Ontario,” Trump said.
He claimed that without US investment and security measures, the freshwater system would not be available for shipping, recreation and responsible use on the same scale as it is today.
Trump highlighted the role of the US Coast Guard, saying it operates nine of the 11 ice-breaking vessels serving the Great Lakes. According to the president, these vessels help keep important commercial shipping routes open during periods of severe winter weather without charging shipping operators.
The president also pointed to US spending on environmental protection. He said the United States had invested nearly $4 billion over the past decade in protecting and restoring the Great Lakes freshwater ecosystem, while claiming that Canadian investment in comparable programmes had been “far less”. The executive order, however, did not provide figures comparing US and Canadian spending.
Trump further sought to underline the geographical and strategic significance of Lake Ontario. The order stated that some of the lake’s deepest sections are within US territory and asserted that the United States accounts for most of its water volume.
The president's order also linked Lake Ontario to the history of American exploration, settlement, trade and national defence. It highlighted Oswego, New York, describing its historical importance as a fort and an early US port of call connected to the St Lawrence Seaway.
The order also referred to Sackets Harbor, which played an important role in shipbuilding and naval operations during the War of 1812. Trump used these historical references to argue that the lake has long been closely connected with the development and security of the United States.
Beyond its historical importance, the White House emphasised the economic role of the wider Great Lakes-St Lawrence Seaway system. According to the administration, the system supports hundreds of thousands of American jobs and contributes billions of dollars in economic activity, cargo value and business revenue.
The waterway is an important transportation route for bulk commodities, including iron ore, limestone, coal and agricultural products. It also supports industrial infrastructure, with water from the lake used by nuclear, natural gas and oil-fired power plants. Communities surrounding the lake also depend on its waters for drinking water.
Trump described Lake Ontario as a resource that would remain important to both the American economy and the country's future.
“In recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that the Lake officially be renamed as Lake America,” he said.
The executive order requires the Interior Department and the Board on Geographic Names to update the Geographic Names Information System, the federal database used for official geographic names. References to “Lake Ontario” would be replaced by “Lake America” in federal records.
Federal departments and agencies will also be instructed to use the new designation on government maps, contracts, official documents and communications.
However, the order's reach is limited. It does not compel the Canadian government or Ontario authorities to change their terminology, nor does it require international organisations or private companies producing maps and navigation services to recognise the new name. The administration also specified that implementation must comply with existing US law and available federal funding.
Lake Ontario is the easternmost and smallest of North America's five Great Lakes by surface area. It borders New York state to the south and east and the Canadian province of Ontario to the north, west and southwest. Its waters drain into the St Lawrence River, which eventually carries them to the Atlantic Ocean.
Trump's latest move follows his earlier decision to alter another major geographic name. In January 2025, he directed the US government to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in federal references. That order similarly required changes to the Geographic Names Information System but did not force other countries or international organisations to adopt the new terminology.
The proposed renaming of Lake Ontario is therefore likely to have its most immediate impact on US federal documents and official communications, while the lake's traditional name is expected to remain in use in Canada and internationally.
