Washington, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump has revived memories of his unprecedented diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, sharing a photograph from their historic 2019 meeting at the inter-Korean border and reiterating that he maintains a strong personal relationship with the North Korean leader.
Trump posted the image on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, saying that although the two leaders appeared serious in the particular photograph, they had shared many lighter moments. “Despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture, there are many where we're smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!” Trump wrote.
The post comes as the White House continues to signal that Trump remains willing to reopen dialogue with Pyongyang without preconditions. However, prospects for renewed talks remain uncertain as North Korea has strengthened its economic, diplomatic and military ties with Russia.
Trump and Kim held three face-to-face meetings during Trump’s first presidential term. Their first summit took place in Singapore in June 2018, followed by a second meeting in Hanoi in February 2019. The third encounter was held at Panmunjom in June 2019.
The Panmunjom meeting became particularly significant after Trump crossed the Military Demarcation Line and briefly entered North Korean territory alongside Kim. He became the first sitting US president to step onto North Korean soil, in a highly symbolic moment that attracted global attention.
Trump had also shared a photograph from his first meeting with Kim in Singapore in June, fuelling speculation that he could seek to revive his personal diplomacy with Pyongyang.
According to Victor Cha, Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Kim could potentially show interest in renewed summit-level engagement with Trump. Cha suggested that such an effort could come after the US midterm elections, particularly if Pyongyang adopts a strategy aimed at strengthening its position as a nuclear-armed state.
