New York, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump was secretly transferred from Air Force One to a smaller military aircraft during his return journey from Turkey to Britain last month after US security officials identified what they considered “credible threats” against the presidential aircraft, according to media reports.
The unusual security operation, described in reports as resembling a scene from a spy thriller, took place after Trump publicly boarded Air Force One in Ankara following his visit to Turkey.
According to The Washington Post, Trump and a small group of senior aides boarded the presidential aircraft in full view of the media. However, after the public boarding ceremony, they were moved through a catering truck that had been raised to the level of the aircraft.
The New York Times reported that Trump was subsequently transferred from the catering vehicle to a car and taken to a smaller C-32A military jet. The aircraft, a military version of the Boeing 757, was then used to fly Trump and the select group of aides to Royal Air Force Mildenhall in Britain.
At the British military base, Trump reportedly transferred to the Boeing 747 aircraft donated by Qatar for the next stage of his journey to the United States.
Other officials and journalists who had boarded Air Force One in Ankara remained on the original aircraft and flew to Britain. They later joined Trump for the onward journey, apparently unaware that the President had already switched aircraft.
Journalists travelling on the plane said they had been instructed to keep the aircraft windows closed during the flight, adding another layer of secrecy to the operation.
The White House has neither confirmed nor denied the reports. However, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung indicated that the President’s travel arrangements had been influenced by security considerations.
“As the president has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats,” Cheung said.
The reported security operation followed another unusual development during Trump’s return journey from the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8.
Trump had travelled to Turkey aboard the Qatar-donated aircraft, which he had publicly praised for its luxurious interiors and described as a potential future presidential aircraft. However, security officials reportedly remained concerned that the aircraft’s rapid modifications had not brought it to the same security standard as the existing Air Force One fleet.
According to the reports, security officials initially arranged for Trump to transfer to an older Air Force One aircraft, while the Qatar-donated plane was sent ahead to Britain. Trump later said the aircraft had been sent to Britain because US military personnel stationed there wanted an opportunity to inspect it.
However, officials cited in the reports said the actual reason involved intelligence indicating “credible threats”. They also raised concerns that the Qatar aircraft did not yet have some of the advanced defensive capabilities incorporated into the older presidential aircraft.
Among the reported shortcomings were the absence of certain anti-missile defence systems and specialised wiring intended to protect the aircraft from electromagnetic surges.
The reports suggest that security officials subsequently determined that even the older Air Force One aircraft did not provide sufficient protection under the circumstances and arranged Trump’s transfer to the C-32A military jet.
Unlike the highly customised presidential aircraft, the military jet is a more conventional aircraft without the luxury features associated with Trump’s preferred mode of travel.
The reported security concerns surrounding the Qatar aircraft had previously become the subject of controversy after The New York Times published details about its limitations based on information from government sources.
The subsequent investigation into the disclosures generated further controversy when the US Department of Justice issued subpoenas seeking information from journalists and, according to reports, some of their relatives. The subpoenas reportedly sought access to mobile phones in an effort to identify sources accused of leaking sensitive information.
Officials defended the move by arguing that the disclosures could have endangered national security. The subpoenas were later withdrawn following significant criticism.
The episode nevertheless drew renewed attention to questions surrounding the security capabilities of the Qatar-donated aircraft and the process through which it was being prepared for potential presidential use.
Trump has said the Qatar aircraft was taken out of service “to be maxed out”, indicating that further upgrades were planned before it could assume a presidential role.
The existing Air Force One aircraft and the Qatar-donated plane are all based on different versions of the Boeing 747. The reported decision to use a smaller military aircraft during the Turkey-to-Britain journey highlights the extensive security measures surrounding presidential travel and the willingness of authorities to alter travel arrangements when intelligence suggests a potential threat.
