Washington, September 2026 : US President Donald Trump is set to make Iran’s nuclear programme a major focus of his diplomatic engagements at the United Nations next week, with talks planned with Gulf leaders and American officials warning that entities doing business with Tehran could face further consequences.
Trump is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday before meeting leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in New York. US officials said Iran would feature prominently in discussions, although they did not confirm whether Trump or other American representatives would hold direct meetings with Iranian officials during the UN gathering.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Trump’s address would underline Washington’s position that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. According to Waltz, the demand is also reflected in repeated resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council.
Trump’s speech is also expected to cover diplomatic agreements and unresolved international conflicts, as well as developments related to his 20-point peace plan for Gaza, Waltz told reporters.
A senior US official said Washington had granted visas to an Iranian delegation attending the UN General Assembly. However, the delegation is expected to be smaller than the one that attended last year. Asked whether meetings between US and Iranian officials were planned, the official said the final schedules of Trump and Secretary of State officials had not yet been determined.
Trump’s planned meeting with GCC leaders is expected to provide an opportunity to discuss regional security and hear directly from Gulf countries about their concerns, another senior US official said.
The official also claimed that efforts to transport oil through alternative routes were reducing Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz. Citing figures attributed to the US Energy Secretary, the official said oil flows were averaging between 10 million and 11 million barrels a day, although the briefing did not specify which routes were included in that estimate.
The administration also pointed to economic pressure on Tehran. A senior official claimed that sanctions and other measures had contributed to a record low for Iran’s currency and record-high inflation, but no supporting economic data were provided during the briefing.
“In one way or another, we expect the Iranian regime to abandon its pursuit of a nuclear weapon,” the official said.
Alongside diplomatic efforts, Washington indicated that it would continue applying pressure on companies and other entities conducting business with Iran. A senior official said the US would continue warning partners, allies and other governments that commercial dealings with the Iranian government could result in consequences.
Another official said the United States had imposed sanctions this year on entities in China and Hong Kong that Washington accused of facilitating revenue generation and oil-related business supporting Iran’s military activities.
“So I think that will continue going forward,” the official said.
The comments came ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, scheduled to begin after Trump returns from New York. US officials did not announce any agreement with Beijing regarding Iran-related sanctions.
Beyond Iran, American officials said discussions at the UN would address attacks on civilian shipping and infrastructure, freedom of navigation and the threat posed by mines in waterways.
The US delegation’s agenda will also extend to broader international issues, including artificial intelligence governance, seabed minerals and undersea cables.
Trump’s Tuesday schedule is expected to include meetings with the British and Japanese prime ministers, a reception for world leaders and an encounter with Venezuela’s acting president. He is scheduled to return to the White House later that evening.
