Mamata Banerjee Uses Poem on ‘Chameleon’ to Target TMC Rebels Amid Internal Crisis

Kolkata, May 2026 : Amid growing internal unrest within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following the party’s crushing electoral defeat, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has responded to dissidence within the party in an unusual manner — by penning a poem themed around a “chameleon”.

The poem, written in Bengali and titled “Chameleon”, was posted on her Facebook page on Wednesday night and is being widely interpreted as an indirect attack on party rebels who have recently targeted TMC national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee over the party’s poor performance.

The internal turmoil within the ruling party has intensified in recent days, with several leaders and elected representatives openly criticising the party leadership and expressing dissatisfaction after the electoral setback.

Without naming anyone directly, Mamata Banerjee appeared to accuse dissident leaders of abandoning the party during a difficult phase and acting out of personal interest.

“More terrifying than the chameleons are those multi-faceted persons who change their colours faster to keep their source of earning intact,” the opening lines of the poem read.

The poem further alleged that such individuals alter their “colours and characters” within hours to safeguard their own financial interests and, in the process, betray the self-respect of ordinary party workers and supporters.

Political observers believe the poem carries a clear message to disgruntled leaders who are either publicly criticising the party leadership or are reportedly exploring political alternatives amid the crisis within the TMC.

The closing lines of the poem also appeared to contain a warning for those seen as disloyal to the party.

“Just as the wheels of the chariot will move, so will your wheels move. You will get results. On that day, the traitors will understand what valueless inhumanity is all about,” the poem stated.

Sources within the party said Mamata Banerjee had sensed signs of rebellion immediately after the election results were announced. During her first interaction with newly elected party legislators, she reportedly told them that anyone wishing to leave the Trinamool Congress was free to do so.

Since then, internal differences have continued to surface, with several leaders openly expressing frustration over the party’s functioning and leadership decisions.

Mamata Banerjee’s latest poetic intervention has now sparked intense political discussion in West Bengal, with many viewing it as a direct and symbolic message aimed at restoring discipline within the party ranks and countering the growing rebellion from within.
