Mamata Threatens Delhi Protest if CBI Fails to Solve RG Kar Case by August 18

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday set an August 18 deadline for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete its probe into the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Banerjee warned that if the CBI fails to apprehend the culprits by the deadline, the Trinamool Congress will stage protests in Delhi. She emphasized the urgency, stating, “If the CBI is unable to nab the culprits by Sunday, there will be bigger agitations. We will stage protest demonstrations in Delhi. We want the culprits to be hanged by Sunday.”

The Chief Minister also accused opposition parties, particularly the CPI(M) and BJP, of inciting violence at the R.G. Kar Medical College’s emergency department, which was ransacked after midnight on Wednesday. She claimed that CPI(M) youth activists gathered at the scene with DYFI flags, while BJP supporters assembled with the national flag, urging that such actions must be stopped.

In a sharp critique of the BJP, Banerjee accused the party of politicizing the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College, arguing that the BJP is struggling to maintain its position at the Centre. She remarked, “Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu are the supports for BJP now. For me, people of all religions are the same. I do not thrive on negative propaganda or mud-slinging.”

Banerjee also issued a veiled warning to the opposition, cautioning them not to push her to her limits. She stated, “The calmer I am, the better it is for you. But if provoked, I can be a cyclone or tornado.”
