IMD Issues Heatwave Alert for Telangana as Temperatures Set to Rise Sharply
Hyderabad, May 2026 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for several parts of Telangana for the next seven days, as the state braces for a significant rise in temperatures during the peak summer season.
According to the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre, maximum temperatures in the state are expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days, intensifying heat conditions across multiple districts. Officials have also warned that between May 19 and May 24, some areas may witness temperatures crossing the 45-degree Celsius mark.
The IMD has stated that heatwave conditions are very likely to occur in isolated pockets of Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, and Rajanna Sircilla districts on May 18. In these regions, daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 45 degrees Celsius, posing health risks to vulnerable populations.
Several parts of Telangana already experienced extreme heat conditions on Sunday. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society showed that Bheemgal mandal in Nizamabad district recorded the highest temperature at 45.7 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Mosra mandal at 45.5 degrees Celsius.
In Nirmal district, heatwave conditions were also reported in multiple mandals, with Dasturabad recording 45.3 degrees Celsius and Tanur reaching 45.1 degrees Celsius. Similarly, Kollur in Banswada mandal of Kamareddy district registered a maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius.
Overall, 16 out of the 33 districts in Telangana recorded temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius or higher. The average maximum temperature across the state stood at 40.8 degrees Celsius, reflecting widespread heat stress conditions.
Within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, the average maximum temperature was recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature within the city was reported at 42.3 degrees Celsius in the Goshamahal circle, indicating rising heat conditions even in urban areas.
In response to the IMD alert, the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, has issued a public advisory urging citizens to follow precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. The advisory includes essential dos and don’ts such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and taking necessary care for children, elderly persons, and outdoor workers.
As part of preparedness measures, the state government has strengthened healthcare arrangements across public health facilities. Special beds have been made available for heat-related cases, along with sufficient stock of intravenous (IV) fluids and essential medicines. Additionally, ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) sachets have been distributed through ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers to ensure immediate response in case of dehydration or heatstroke-related emergencies.
