Sweden And Denmark Strengthen Ukraine’s Air Defence With Modern Anti-Aircraft Guns
February 2026: Minister of Defence Pål Jonson and Danish Minister of Defence Troel Lund Poulsen have announced that Sweden and Denmark are jointly purchasing Tridon Mk 2 anti-aircraft guns to support Ukraine. By offering other countries the opportunity to co-finance Swedish-made equipment, volumes can increase, costs can be reduced and production capacity can be increased. Ukraine can thus receive more weapon systems more quickly.
The fact that Sweden and, Denmark donating Tridon to Ukraine from today – 03rd February 2026, is significant. A joint purchase to support Ukraine not only helps Ukraine on the battlefield with more equipment, but it also strengthens Swedish, Nordic and European security of supply, says Minister of Defence Pål Jonson.
With the donation, Denmark is helping to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capacity in the middle of a winter when Russian air strikes against civilian infrastructure are affecting the country’s energy supply. Therefore, continued massive military assistance to Ukraine is crucial to giving the country the strength to resist and continue its fight for freedom, says Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen.
The Tridon Mk2 is a new Swedish-made mobile anti-aircraft gun system manufactured by BAE Systems Bofors. It is based on a newly developed version of the Bofors 40 mm gun that has been in use around the world for over 90 years and other proven subsystems. The carrier is a Scania off-road truck, but the system can be used on other platforms, e.g., tracked vehicles.
The Tridon system is intended for combating drones, cruise missiles, helicopters and attack aircraft, but can also be used for close protection against threats on the ground. The Tridon systems being procured for donation to Ukraine are additionally equipped with a command system and Saab’s Giraffe 1-X sensors. The systems also include spare parts and large quantities of ammunition, including advanced programmable high-explosive grenades, so-called 3P ammunition.
Sweden has financed Tridon systems with a total value of SEK 2.1 billion within the framework of the Swedish military support packages 18, 19 and 20. Denmark has decided to expand the procurement with additional Tridon pieces and additional equipment, etc., to a value of approximately SEK 480 million. This corresponds to equipment for an air defence battalion.
The systems will begin to be delivered to Ukraine within 12 months. Sweden has prepared to be able to quickly order additional Tridon systems if other countries decide to join.
Together with the Danish contribution, Ukraine will receive complete Tridon systems, which will give Ukraine a considerable capability on the battlefield or in the protection of civilian infrastructure, buildings and populations against Russian mass attacks with drones and missiles.
Team Maverick.
