China Calls For Constructive Strategic Stability In Bilateral Ties.

Beijing; May 2026: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged that China and the US should build a relationship based on ‘constructive strategic stability’. This should be centred on cooperation, measured competition, manageable differences and durable peace, Xi said, adding that it should not be ‘merely a slogan’ but action ‘moving in the same direction.

President Jinping has also warned against the so-called ‘Thucydides Trap’ – the idea that conflict can arise when a rising power challenges an established one, underscoring the need to avoid confrontation. 

Striking a more forward-looking note, Xi said he hopes to work with Trump to ‘steer the giant ship’ of China–US relations, and make 2026 a landmark year for ties.

On trade, Xi said the ‘overall balanced and positive results’ reached by the two countries’ economic and trade teams a day earlier were ‘good news’ for both sides and the world. He described China-US economic ties as ‘mutually beneficial and win-win in nature’, adding that equal consultation was the ‘only correct choice’ for handling differences and frictions. Xi also reiterated that “the door of China’s opening-up will only open wider and wider”, while welcoming greater mutually beneficial cooperation with American businesses.

According to the Chinese readout, Trump introduced the accompanying American business executives to Xi one by one during the talks. Chinese state media has reported that Xi told US CEOs accompanying Trump that China’s door would only open wider, and that he believed US companies would have broader prospects in the country. “China’s doors to the outside world will open wider and wider; American companies will enjoy even brighter prospects in China”, the Chinese President has reportedly said. Xi have met the delegation of CEOs, including Elon Musk, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and Apple’s Tim Cook, in the Great Hall of the People, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

“Yesterday, our economic and trade teams produced generally balanced and positive outcomes. This is good news for the people of the two countries and the world”, Xi said. Facts have shown time and again that trade wars have no winner, he noted. “Where disagreements and frictions exist, equal-footed consultation is the only right choice”, he said, calling on the two sides to jointly sustain the good momentum that they have worked hard to create.
